Job Overview:
The Shop Manager for Semi-Truck Maintenance is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the maintenance shop operations for a fleet of semi-trucks. This includes managing a team of technicians, ensuring that all trucks and trailers are properly maintained, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The Shop Manager will also be responsible for managing inventory, scheduling repairs, and optimizing the overall performance of the maintenance department to reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shop Operations Management:
- Oversee daily operations of the semi-truck maintenance shop, ensuring that all service requests and repair work are completed efficiently and on time.
- Schedule and prioritize repairs, preventive maintenance, and inspections to minimize truck downtime and ensure fleet reliability.
- Ensure that all work orders are completed according to company and industry standards, with a focus on quality and safety.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the shop at all times.
- Team Leadership and Supervision:
- Lead, manage, and mentor a team of maintenance technicians and support staff, ensuring high performance, professionalism, and skill development.
- Assign tasks to technicians based on their expertise, skills, and workload.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement training programs to improve team skills and knowledge.
- Foster a positive work environment, promoting teamwork, accountability, and a commitment to excellence.
- Fleet Maintenance and Performance:
- Ensure that all semi-trucks and trailers are maintained according to manufacturer recommendations and regulatory requirements.
- Manage preventive maintenance schedules to ensure trucks undergo timely inspections and servicing.
- Track the performance of the fleet, analyzing issues such as downtime, repair costs, and vehicle performance, and implement strategies for continuous improvement.
- Develop and execute plans for fleet repairs and part replacements to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Inventory and Resource Management:
- Manage inventory for parts, tools, and equipment necessary for semi-truck maintenance, ensuring availability and minimizing delays.
- Negotiate with vendors and suppliers to ensure cost-effective procurement of quality parts and materials.
- Monitor parts usage, ensuring that inventory levels are optimized to meet maintenance needs while minimizing excess stock.
- Ensure the proper storage and organization of tools and equipment in the shop.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce strict safety protocols in the shop, ensuring all staff adhere to OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory safety standards.
- Perform regular safety audits and inspections, addressing any hazards or non-compliance issues immediately.
- Ensure that all semi-trucks are in compliance with state and federal regulations, including inspections, repairs, and maintenance logs.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry regulations and ensure the shop remains in full compliance with applicable laws.
- Customer and Vendor Relations:
- Interface with the operations and logistics teams to ensure that maintenance schedules align with fleet utilization and operational needs.
- Handle customer complaints and concerns professionally, addressing any maintenance-related issues promptly to maintain customer satisfaction.
- Maintain relationships with vendors, negotiating contracts and service agreements to ensure the best pricing and service levels for parts and supplies.
- Budget and Cost Control:
- Develop and manage the shop’s budget, ensuring efficient use of resources while keeping operational costs within company targets.
- Track labor, material costs, and repair expenses to identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
- Monitor repair costs and work to reduce unnecessary expenditures, identifying preventive measures to avoid costly repairs.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Regularly review shop operations and maintenance procedures to identify areas for improvement.
- Stay informed on new technologies and best practices in semi-truck maintenance, implementing improvements to enhance shop efficiency and vehicle performance.
- Lead efforts to optimize shop processes, reducing downtime and enhancing the overall productivity of the maintenance operation.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or an associate degree in automotive technology or diesel mechanics preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in the maintenance or repair of semi-trucks, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- In-depth knowledge of semi-truck maintenance, including diesel engines, braking systems, electrical systems, and other mechanical components.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a team.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and other industry safety and compliance standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on improving shop performance and reducing downtime.
- Proficiency in maintenance management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is a plus.
