Position Summary:
As a Lead Driller, you will be responsible for obtaining quality subsurface samples in a timely efficient and safe manner as well as securing, caring for and then transporting samples to the laboratory while keeping accurate hand-written records of drilling and sampling efforts in the form of boring logs, specializing in both shallow and deep foundation investigations.
In addition, the purpose of this position is to be the crew leader, responsible for the care and safe use of company equipment, mentoring and training of junior staff and interacting with both project engineers and client representatives in a professional and positive manner.
Job Responsibilities:
- Travel safely to various job sites in a company provided vehicle; maintain company vehicle (schedule oil changes, inside/outside upkeep and complete monthly vehicle inspection reports)
- Perform drilling and bore exploratory vertical holes into the earth to evaluate soil samples and strength characteristics
- Prepare equipment and supplies for each day’s drilling projects
- Drive rig and equipment with a CDL License
- Inspect drill rig and roll-on carrier daily in general accordance with IFTA/DOT guidelines
- Perform routine maintenance on drill rig and roll-on carrier as needed, communicating extraordinary maintenance or repair needs to staff mechanic/managers
- Operate roll-on carrier to transport drill rigs from site to site
- Operate hand-clearing equipment (chain saw, bush axe, etc.) as needed to gain entry to boring locations
- Operate ATV and Geoprobe drill rigs as needed
- Keep legible and organized hand-written logs of each drilled boring
- Identify, secure and transport all samples obtained during drilling operations to company laboratory
- Mentor drilling helpers/assistants
- Meet footage goals set by Department Manager
- Cooperate with other members of the Geotechnical Department, adding to a safe and professional work environment
- May operate miscellaneous drilling equipment including rods, augers, etc.
- Have daily and professional communication with the Field Crews, Department Managers and clients
- Maintain clean trucks and equipment
- Complete accurate and detailed field logs and update existing logs as needed
- Perform manual labor by assembling, operating and disassembling equipment
- Follow all company safety procedures, protocols and policies
- GIS Mapping
- Borehole layouts
- Piezometric water measurements
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications & Skills:
- Required: Outdoor work experience
- Required: Prior experience as a drilling lead, drilling assistant, field/engineering technician, construction or related experience
- Required: Ability to prioritize tasks and organize data
- Required: Ability to accurately complete daily field paperwork as prescribed
- Required: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, detailed reports, short correspondence and memos
- Required: Ability to read, write and use technology including phone and computer
- Required: Ability and willingness to provide excellent customer service to clients
- Required: Ability and willingness to efficiently and effectively communicate with engineers throughout the drilling process
- Required: Ability to perform hollow-stem auger, mud-rotary and/or rock coring methods
- Required: Ability to accurately obtain, identify, secure and transport samples during drilling operations
- Required: Ability and willingness to safely operate company equipment and perform routine maintenance
- Required: Ability and willingness to teach, mentor and transmit safe and accurate drilling skills to junior staff
- Required: Must act professionally and hold others accountable to the same level of conduct
- Required: High School diploma or equivalent
- Required: Must be at least 18 years old for entry onto job sites and to drive a company vehicle
- Required: Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
- Required: CDL A License
- Preferred: North Carolina Well Driller’s License – Class A
- Preferred: Experience in the operation of CPT equipment
- Preferred: Experience in rock coring
- Preferred: OSHA 10-hour
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday with some weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
- Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments
- Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and repetitive motions
- Some weekend, overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required with work days, ranging from 8-12 hours
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, accurately complete field testing paperwork and follow direction from others to complete tasks as assigned
- The drilling process is a repetitive process, often repeated several times and hour, requiring extensive, manual lifting and handling with and without assistance
- Ability to continuously perform body motions and movements including bending, twisting, reaching, pulling, pushing, stooping and kneeling during drilling operations and related tasks
- Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)
- Ability to lift up to 100lbs.
- You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day within the Mid-Atlantic region
