Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant works under the direction of the physician and in cooperation with the other office staff in assisting with safe and effective patient care in compliance with established standards and protocols of the practice and UF Health Central Florida goals and objectives.

"LPN may substitute for an MA"

  • Prepares charts for new patients to include face sheets, H&P, Med lists, progress notes and chief complaint.
  • Works with physician and practice management to establish required policies and procedures. Provides safe and effective patient care under direction of the physician, LPN, and other office staff
  • Escorts patients from waiting area into exam room. Documents brief history of reason for visit and obtains and records vital signs following traditional techniques. Performs initial and ongoing assessment of patients presenting for care, utilizing guidelines established the hospital and practice. Documents patient information in medical record that includes observation, care administered results of diagnostic tests, and patient’s response, when directed.
  • Assists physician as instructed within scope of expertise and training. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of medical equipment, as appropriate, within the scope of the practice. Assists patients with ambulation using proper technique and tools.
  • Schedules patients for procedures, diagnostic testing or specialists, as directed by the physician. Relays laboratory and x-ray results to patients, via telephone or mail, as directed by the physician. Maintains a log of diagnostic tests, ordered and received, as well as notification of patient.
  • Documents and administers therapeutic injections, as well as medications, under the supervision of the physician. Assists physician with office procedures.
  • Responds promptly to patient calls. Accepts and communicates all telephone messages to the physician. Communicates patient care concerns to appropriate personnel, bringing situations out of his/her realm to the attention of the supervisor. Upon request, communicates physician directions to patient via return telephone calls. Provides follow-up by telephoning patient/family to check on condition.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of CPT, ICD9.
  • Monitors confidentiality (HIPPA) by adhering to all mandated guidelines at all times.
  • Accepts and supports the hospital philosophy, policies and procedures and supports the department philosophy of quality customer services.
  • Provides support and back up to the department receptionist in all duties, including but not limited to phones, scheduling, patient registration and check out. Relieves other staff members as indicated for scheduled and unscheduled breaks.
  • Organizes and straightens work area at the end of the shift. Wipes surfaces with disinfectant. Returns all stock and forms to appropriate level. Work area is to be left ready for next shift. Assumes responsibility for inventory control of clinical supplies, ensuring adequate levels are kept, and organized, on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintains exam rooms are neat and clean between each patient use.
  • Provides control and maintenance of biohazardous waste and sharps.
  • Label samples according to protocol before they are dispensed to patients.
  • Coordinates the physician’s workday and interacts with patients to resolve issues as appropriate. Provides and documents patient/family teaching based on an assessment of needs, as directed by the physician.
  • Telephone or faxes prescription requests to pharmacies as directed by the physician.

Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education
    • Associates Degree Preferred
    • Post High School Special Training
    • High School Diploma/GED
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration
    • Current certification or registration as a Medical Assistant Preferred.
    • Basic Life Support (CPR) required or must be obtained within first month of employment. Must maintain current Basic Life Support (CPR).
  • Special Skills/Qualifications/Additional Training/Experience Required
    • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
    • Prefer experience working with practice management systems
    • Must have 1 year experience working in physician office
    • Prefer experience with medical terminology
