Overview:
The RN Lactation Counselor possesses a strong background in mother baby care. In this role, the RN works closely with patients and staff to drive efforts of exclusive breast feeding. Provides group and individual education services to patients and provides education to staff as necessary.
Responsibilities:- Provides individual and group breastfeeding education for patient and families, that is evidenced based and current.
- Assists with breast feeding as needed through evaluation, guidance, and recommendation for all patients, including NICU population.
- Documents in medical record regarding consult, services rendered, progress and pertinent information noted, (i.e. latch, interaction, etc.).
- Provides consult services by phone for both patients and staff.
- Provides breast feeding education to staff as necessary.
- Coordinates 24 hour lactation support for the department utilizing CLC's whenever possible.
- Compiles statistics related to breast feeding and staff documentation concerning breast feeding. Provides report on findings to management as requested.
- Participate in external education services for Childbirth Classes and Breastfeeding Support Groups.
- Provides direct patient care consistent with the Registered Nurse job description as necessary.
Required education:
- Associate's in Nursing
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
