Your Role as an Acting Long-Term Substitute Teacher
- Engage & Educate - Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) and facility-specific pacing guides.
- Flexible Teaching - Teach grades 4–8 (all subjects) or high school courses such as Economics, Personal Finance, English, Science, Mathematics, History & Social Science, Physical Education, Art, or Health Education.
- Structured Classroom Management - implement trauma-informed behavioral systems and classroom management plans to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
- Personalized Instruction - Differentiate lessons based on students Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and provide appropriate accommodations.
- Data-Driven Teaching - Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Collaboration & Leadership - Work closely with paraprofessionals, school staff, and mental health teams to support student success.
- Student Supervision & Support - Oversee students in the classroom, during transitions, lunch, arrival, and dismissal.
- Professional Development - Attend weekly training sessions and participate in ongoing learning opportunities to enhance teaching strategies.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or college required.
- Holds or eligible for a Virginia teaching license (provisional, collegiate, or postgraduate professionals) preferred.
- Experience teaching special education: general curriculum, grades 4–8, and/or high school content as a teacher, long-term substitute teacher, or a substitute teacher in a private or public school setting preferred.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work with other departmental staff (residential, case management, therapy, etc.).
- Flexibility to take on various subject areas, grade levels, and temporary long-term substitute teacher assignments on a relatively short notice.
- Demonstrated skills in oral and written communications; excellent human relations skills.
Certificates, licenses and registrations required: current driver’s licensure with a good driving record, CPR certification, first aid certificate, and crisis management certification
