Responsibilities

The Assistant Director, Surgical Services is responsible for the ongoing, effective operation of Surgical Services, and for the ongoing assessment and improvement of Surgical Services activities. Such responsibilities encompass the internal functioning of Surgical Services, which facilitates the functioning of Surgical Services in the overall organization. The Assistant Director, Surgical Services supports an organizational culture for Service Excellence and practices the Service Excellence standards to all customer groups.             

  • Staffing - Assesses and provides Surgical Services departments with the appropriate Staffing to Demand within their areas utilizing tools to measure, track, monitor and report the facility department processes.  Measured through productivity and management documentation.
  • Safe Environment – Puts safety first for employees; ensures compliance with OSHA, Infection Control and Environment of Care requirements.  Provides training to staff.  Measured by knowledge of staff through safety rounds and workers’ compensation claims, etc.
  • Hiring – Responsible for complying with St. Mary’s hiring procedure and ensures that interviews are completed timely.  Measured by vacancy rate and time-to-fill position.
  • Evaluations – Provides timely feedback to new hires through the onboarding toolkit.  Provides intermittent feedback to staff on performance along with annual performance evaluations.  Measured by 100% complete timely.
  • Employee Competency/Education – Assesses current staff educational needs.  Develops structures and processes within Surgical
  • Services to improve employee knowledge, skills and abilities.  Utilizes best practices to positively impact Staff education and competencies.  Measured through competency documentation and education plan.
  • Employee Satisfaction – Demonstrates commitment to employee satisfaction by taking specific steps to create a positive work experience for self and others.  Actively and effectively “manages up” and communicates successes.  Demonstrates creativity and consistency in recognizing and rewarding staff.  Measured through staff satisfaction and turnover.
  • Individual Accountability – Holds self and others accountable for actions and achieving desired outcomes.  Facilitates sharing of ideas, strategies, and tactics to achieve departmental facility targets.  Collaborates with Corporate and Facility leaders in completion of all initiatives.
  • Finance – Responsible for monitoring financial performance and cost reductions for areas of responsibility.  Also develops the operations and capital budget.  Measured through monthly reports and budgets.
  • Quality – Demonstrates commitment to excellence.  Identifies and implements new, or cutting edge programs, processes and/or approaches in area of responsibility that improve organizational efficiency, outcomes, and performance.  Utilizes best practices in developing Quality initiatives.  Ensures that areas of responsibility are in constant state of regulatory readiness.  Complies with organization/department policies and procedures; takes initiative to update/change as necessary.  Measured through value based purchasing, HCAHPS, policies, etc.
  • Program Administration - Develops presentations, projects, work plans, timelines and milestones.  Assumes initial responsibility for measuring, tracking, monitoring, and reporting initiatives.  Develops status updates.
  • Surgical Services Integrative Support – Assists with assessment, mentoring, and support of facility based surgical services staff. 
  • Provides Surgical Services expertise to Quality, Performance Improvement, Nursing, Finance, Supply Management and Information Technology.  Supports the maximization of surgical information system.
  • Participation – Participates in required meetings to include; OPS Council, Physician aligned committee meetings, Corporate Initiative calls, etc.
  • RN Circulator Competencies required and ability to assist when needed in surgical cases.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

• Current RN licensure in State of Oklahoma required.  BSN preferred.

• BLS certified required unless ACLS is obtained and maintained semi-annually.

• One year OR experience required.

• Healthcare Provider Law reviewed and signed within first 14 days of employment required. Annual review through HS Learning required thereafter.

• Supervisory experience preferred.

• CNOR encouraged.  AORN membership encouraged.  

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

• Basic computer skills required.

• Must successfully complete the nursing assessment.
