Responsibilities

Medical Director

 

SUMMARY STATEMENT & PURPOSE

The Psychiatrist is responsible to oversee the quality of care delivered to his/her patients.  Asses clinical appropriateness for admission and collaborate with Intake / Admissions regarding potential admissions.  Perform psychiatric assessments for individuals under his/her care.  Complete documentation necessary to address patients hospitalized under civil commitment statues.  Provide individual therapy, family therapy and/or medication management as needed for patients under his/her care.  Appropriately request consultations when indicated and provide psychiatric consultations when requested.

All employees are expected to be pleasant, respectful, and courteous in all interactions with patients, families, staff, and visitors of the Hospital, as well as being a positive representative of INBH at all times.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school
  • Completed residency in Psychiatry
  • Licensed as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Must maintain active status with medical staff
  • BLS provided by INBH

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in a hospital based psychiatric practice and outpatient psychiatric practice preferred
  • Board Certification Preferred

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

All functions are essential functions unless otherwise noted.

The job functions of this position are not limited to the duties listed below.

 

  1. Coordinate care with referral sources and other involved professionals
  2. Maintain regular communication with family members as appropriate
  3. Return phone calls to professionals and family in a timely manner
  4. Encourage patients to participate fully in all aspects of the treatment program
  5. Educate all patients, whenever possible, about ways to facilitate recovery
  6. Help patients benefit from their insurance by timely completion of all paperwork, returning phone calls, and actively participating in utilization management
  7. Complete assessments and reports within specified time lines
  8. Chart each relevant contact related to the patient on day of contact
  9. Chart entries should record the patient’s response to treatment, current mental status, progress in the program, and need for continued treatment if appropriate
  10. Chart to specific treatment plan goals
  11. Ensure the treatment plan is completed and on the chart within the specified time frame
  12. Complete a group therapy note for all patients in group therapy within specified time lines
  13. Respond to emergent/non-emergent calls in a timely manner

 

 

PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, their families, staff and others
  • Ability to effectively utilize communication equipment
  • Physical agility to manage patients (ambulatory, non-ambulatory and physically aggressive)
  • Ability to read (i.e. patient charts, written communication, regulations, written policies and procedures, etc.)
  • Ability to write (i.e. manual charting, written communication, etc.)
  • Must be able to observe patient behaviors and write notes in medical charts
  • Must be able to physically assist or restrain patients in compliance with the restraint policy
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time, up to 8 hours
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to reach above and below the waist, turn, twist and manipulate small tools (copier, computer, telephone, calculator, safe, fax machine, etc.)
  • Ability to move frequently in the completion of job requirements
  • Ability to handle a variety of repetitive tasks
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks under deadlines and with short notice
