Responsibilities

Performs neurologic diagnostic procedures utilizing electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment.  Performs electrocardiogram (EKG) and cardiac stress tests utilizing EKG and/or Stress equipment. Performs Pulmonary Function Tests utilizing Med graphics or other PFT equipment. Able set up and download Holter Monitors. Deliver safe and accurate patient care to those patients experiencing cardio-pulmonary difficulties and insure the smooth operation of the Cardio-Pulmonary Special Procedures Department. Along with other assigned RRT duties.      

  • Assure proper electrode placement and accurately perform testing inclusive of EEG, EKG, Stress Test and Holter Monitor.
  • Uses Two Patient Identifiers on all patients
  • Recognize and correct possible malfunctions of diagnostic equipment in order to obtain optimal test results. 
  • Perform necessary procedures to maintain proper function of equipment or retain services to do so.
  • Assists physician with Stress Tests, assuring proper lead placement and function of equipment.
  • Assess and monitors patient condition, able to recognize potentially critical situations during testing.
  • Able to perform all aspects of Pulmonary Function Test including: Pre and Post bronchodilator, DLCO, Plethysmography, Slow Vital Capacity
  • Able to perform Histamine /Methacholene Challenge and Nitrogen Washout
  • Documents patient status and care given.
  • Responsible for input, maintenance, and review of patient information, orders, identification/location and patient charges.
  • Accurate and timely transcription of dictated reports and distribution to appropriate areas.
  • Responsible for assessing, maintaining, and ordering department inventory including supplies and any medication necessary to area.
  • Assumes and share responsibility of workload and assignments according to skill level required.
  • Demonstrates competence in assembling and operating equipment for patient care.
  • Obtains data pertinent to therapy by chart review and physical exam.
  • Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment.  Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery.  Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
  • Maintains asepsis with appropriate hand washing between patients
  • Follows departmental equipment sterilization procedures by cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing equipment as needed according to department policy. 
  • Able to assess patient pain interfering with optimal level of function or participation in rehabilitation - makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Provides complete and competent ventilatory management on adult, pediatric and neonatal patients
  • Responds to Code Blue situations quickly and efficiently and performs CPR as needed.
  • Consistently exchanges opened or unlocked carts and restocks crash cart post code.
  • Documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record following completion of any service.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage.
  • Receives and gives report on condition of assigned patients to include patient information, order changes, and initiation of new orders, transfers and dismissals. Inputs any necessary changes.
  • Assumes share and responsibility of workload, according to level of skill and abilities.
  • Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning
  • Performs all duties as outlined in the “Shift Responsibilities” section for the shift that the therapist works.
  • Practices effective problem identification/ resolution skills as a method of sound decision-making.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients, as well as the general patient population
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of oxygen concentrations and medication doses as they relate to patients of varying ages, including neo, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient, his/her need, and ability to tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatment.
  • Adheres to “five rights” when administering patient medications and uses 2 patient identifiers
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Intervenes appropriately in the event of adverse drug reaction.
  • Ensures medication cart/pyxis security is maintained and ensures medication is not left unattended.
  • Reacts efficiently to emergency situations by adhering to policies and protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning.  Patient’s family is included in teaching as appropriate
  • Remains flexible in staffing patterns, willing to trade or work extra shifts in resolution of staffing conflicts
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.  Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and that hospital policy is followed.
  • Adheres to all patient safety policy and procedures and follows all applicable national patient safety goals.
  • Attends education in-service programs to maintain professional competency.  Obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training.
  • Demonstrates timely self-directed learning and participates in continuing education annually to meet or exceed own professional licensure and department specific requirements.
  • Maintains all required certifications in a timely manner.
  • Other duties assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current Oklahoma RCP license or Provisional letter required until Board meets as designated on the letter.
  • Graduated from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with a minimum of Associate’s degree.
  • NBRC Registered (RRT) credentials required and maintained per NBRC.
  • BLS required until ACLS obtained.
  • ACLS certification required within 6 months of employment and annual re-certification required.
  • PALS certification required within 6 months of employment and annual re-certification required.
  • TEAM-de-escalation training required within 6 months of hire.
  • NRP is preferred.
  • Healthcare Provider Law reviewed and signed within first 14 days of employment required. Annual review through HS Learning required thereafter.
  • Must successfully complete the pre-employment assessment.
  • Some clinical experience preferred.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Typing and basic computer skills required.
