Controller

A great UHY client is seeking a Controller to join their team. The ideal candidate will have previous accounting experience, payroll experience, their CPA (but not a requirement), and at least 7 years of experience.

The Controller role is an onsite position, but it will offer a bit of flex as needed. This is a client direct hire position.

Controller Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain all accounting records including trial balance and general ledger. Prepares related journal entries to general ledger. Prepares monthly/quarterly account reconciliations to the general ledger, including bank account reconciliations, prepaids, deposits and accruals.
• Prepares the monthly financial statements, including the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement in a timely manner.
• Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting. Analyze financial information, monitor budgeted versus actual expenditures, and advise the General Manager about variances and their potential causes; recommend corrective actions in real-time to help ensure that budget goals are met.
• Develop policies to control and coordinate financing, accounting, auditing, budgets, taxes and related activities and records; develop, establish, and administer procedures and systems pertaining to financial matters.
• Work with the General Manager and department heads to plan and manage capital budgets and cash flow statements. Prepare monthly capital expenditures report.
• Supervise Accounting staff on a daily basis.
• Work closely with all department heads on a daily basis.
• Special projects for upper management and analysis of financial impact.
• Coordinate budgeting process with Finance Committee and management.
• Coordinate and prepare year-end reconciliations and documentation required for external auditors (currently UHY Advisors). Works with the external auditors to ensure that procedures are consistent with generally accepted accounting principles and industry standards.
• Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and ensure that all taxes are filed correctly. Prepare applicable federal, state and local tax returns.
• Oversee member billing and collection procedures. Coordinate collection efforts with the General Manager.
• Responsible for maintaining compliance on all licenses – sales tax, liquor, music.
• Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
• Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts.
• Administer employee benefits including health and life insurance, pension plans and workers’ compensation; gather information and provide input to the General Manager regarding employee benefit plans.
• Responsible for the supervision of HR including recordkeeping for paid time off, employee benefits, and payroll files. In coordination with department heads, perform employee onboarding tasks to include background screening, benefits enrollment, time off management, and ensure all paperwork is completed and employee ID is assigned.
• Oversee and administrate employer 401K plan. Review investment decisions by investment advisors.
• Assist the General Manager in any union related issues/negotiations.
• Create and sustain productive banking, insurance, and contractual relationships; liaise with related third parties.

Controller Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervise the staffing, scheduling, training, and professional development of the department’s team members.
• Ensure that all accounting employees adhere to the roles and responsibilities associated with their positions.
• Instruct and keep executive team informed of finance and accounting procedures.
• Coordinate and control HR transitions including employee files, payroll, and insurance.

Controller Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related area.
• Background in hospitality accounting.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and strong computer skills
• CPA preferred
• Strong organizational skills.
