Position Summary


The Infusion Therapy Nurse is responsible for providing and coordinating comprehensive infusion services, including teaching patients how to self-administer infusion and enteral therapies following hospitalization by using sound nursing processes and standards of care. This position works cooperatively with pharmacy and team members to establish priorities and goals of patient care while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice. Patient education is conducted primarily in an office or hospital setting.

Position Responsibilities


  • Educates patients and families on therapies and services provided.
  • Administer IV therapies to patients based on orders from physicians and other medical professionals.
  • Admit patients to the University of Iowa HomeCare (UICH) services, handling all aspects of the admittance process.
  • Perform patient visits according to the Plan of Care or as patient need dictates.
  • Complete required patient care documentation, nursing plan of care, and reports.
  • Coordinates the referral process for infusion therapy services with pharmacy and outside referral sources.
  • Communicates regularly with the pharmacist regarding the specific instructions and needs of UICH patients.
  • Perform case management activities for assigned patients.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of infusion therapy education protocols and materials.
  • Actively participates in UIHC quality assurance programs.
  • Participates in nursing staff education and training programs and maintains skills for assessing, delivering, and teaching home infusion therapy patients according to UICH Policies and Procedures and industry standards.
  • Responds to verbal and written communications, concerns, or complaints from patients, families, care teams, insurance companies, and contract vendors.
  • Occasional on-call duties including phone triage.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements


  • Associate's degree in nursing.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
  • Active CPR Certification.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance and have the availability of personal and dependable mode(s) of transportation to conduct patient visits.
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to patient-centered care.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, staff members, and the care team.
  • General computer skills are required.

Desired Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • 1 year of RN experience.
  • Infusion experience preferred.
  • Patient education experience preferred.
  • Experience with central lines preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities


  • Proficient in administering IV therapies and performing infusion services.
  • Strong ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including pharmacy staff, to manage patient care and referrals.
  • Demonstrated experience in patient education, including explaining therapies, procedures, and services to patients and families.
  • Skilled in case management and developing individualized nursing plans of care while maintaining accurate and comprehensive documentation.
  • Adept at managing on-call responsibilities and responding promptly to patient needs or concerns.

Physical Requirements


These physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Lift/push/pull up to 35lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull 50 lbs. on a hand cart.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time; 50% desk work.

Additional Eligibility Requirements


  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Successful completion of reference checks.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Expected Work Hours and Location


8–10-hour shifts with occasional nights and weekends that are on call; on call time is compensated. Days and hours are subject to change with notice.
