UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking an 100% Nurse Clinician to support our Electrophysiology Team.

UI Heart and Vascular Center is home to the largest and most comprehensive Electrophysiology (EP) Program in Iowa offering unique and cutting-edge therapies to patients with arrhythmias.  Nurse Clinicians within the program develop to become clinical experts in the field and serve as advanced care coordinators for patients seen by our EP providers. Within this role, Nurse Clinicians collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to evaluate and treat patients who have been diagnosed with arrhythmias. Our nursing team works with patients, both in clinic and in patient triage, to manage symptoms, provide education and coordinate care. Outside of direct patient care, our Nurse Clinicians participate in advancing our program by developing and managing quality initiatives, policies, and educational materials towards improving processes and clinical care.

Being a Nurse in the Heart and Vascular Center

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for patient care in the clinic setting including assessment of vital signs, ensuring current medications and allergies are charted, and management of wound dressings.
  • Provide in depth pre-op education and post-op follow up to patients undergoing procedures. 
  • Perform triage of patient calls to manage symptoms appropriately. Facilitate medication refills as needed.
  • Collaborate with HVC Device Nurse Specialists to monitor and manage patient arrhythmias remotely.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Independently coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines within both the confines of UIHC and the local communities (including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services). 
  • Autonomously communicate with referring physician and health care facilities in a timely manner.
  • Provide cross-coverage to other HVC Nurse Clinicians as needed.
  • Design, implement and revise patient/family health education activities for patients.
  • Assess learning needs of patients and families and provide appropriate education related to diagnosis, procedures, risk factor modification, and treatment regimens.
  • Facilitate learning and provide consultation to those in other areas of cardiology and UIHC as well as external agencies, communities, and other health care professionals.
  • Facilitate educational experiences for health care students and monitors the care delivered.
  • Serve as clinical preceptor to new nursing staff as directed by the Nursing Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Participate in decision-making processes at the unit and department level to manage issues that impact clinical practice.
  • Develop and provide leadership for patient care programs within electrophysiology including collaboration with other health care professionals and specialties.
  • Participate in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards required to meet state and national agency accreditation.
  • Use relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems related to the unit and department.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of division/unit quality assessment and improvement programs.
  • Assist with the conduct of research activities within the area of specialty.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice.
  • Interact with staff, patients, medical staff, peers, and others in a professional and cooperative manner.
  • Support a work environment that fosters teamwork and is conducive to the recruitment and retention of staff.
  • Remain calm and constructive in conflict situations, listen and attempt to understand other points of view.
  • Analyze own performance in accordance with position expectations, develops goals and implement a plan to meet goals.
  • Follow general policies and procedures in accordance with the regulations of the University of Iowa, UI Health Care, the HVC, and the Department of Nursing.

Education Requirement

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.

Experience Requirement

  • Minimum 6 months providing direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular medical/surgical patients OR Minimum 1 year providing direct nursing care/ care coordination within an outpatient setting required.
  • Demonstrated ability to professionally interact with patients/families, nursing staff and other multi-disciplinary team members required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and clinical expertise in specific clinical area of practice required. 

Certification/Licensure Requirement•    

  • Current certification in BLS required by start date.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa required by start date.

Desired Qualifications

  • 3 years providing direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular medical/surgical patient population.
  • Experience managing the care coordination of patients in an outpatient setting and/or within cardiothoracic surgery desired.
  • Experience in an academic medical setting desired.
  • Previous experience using EPIC desired.
