UI Health is looking for a Bilingual Ophthalmic Assistant to join our 55th & Pulaski Health Collaborative location. Under the direct supervision of an Ophthalmologist, the ophthalmic assistant collects patient information, updates medical records, performs administrative office tasks, interacts with and educates patients about lenses, contacts, and eye hygiene. The ophthalmic assistant performs some vision tests, measures eye pressure, and performs other minor eye examinations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepares exam room for daily clinical activities.
- Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of medical equipment/supplies and floor stock medication in clinic.
- Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
- Examines eye for abnormalities.
- Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
- Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
- Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects.
- Measures axial length of eye using biometry.
- Measures glasses so they properly fit the patient.
- Performs other related tests and measurements.
- Responds to patient inquires and relays information to the appropriate clinician based on the nature of the inquiry.
- Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses.
- Documents patients’ histories and instructs patients concerning eye care.
- Performs technical workups and special testing.
- Performs basic ophthalmic photography including, but not limited to optical coherence tomography (OCT).
- Instructs lower-level ophthalmic personnel and students in the technical aspects of some vision tests and minor eye examinations as part of their onboarding and/or training.
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
