Overview
The Marine Port Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair operations of Bowhead Transport vessels and equipment. This role ensures all maintenance and repair activities align with Bowhead Transport’s management strategy, budget, and operational direction.
Key responsibilities include :
- Coordinating and executing vessel and equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Overseeing and participating in major shipyard projects, repairs, and maintenance in collaboration with third-party contractors, vendors, shipyards, engineering teams, and other service providers.
- Assisting the Port Captain, Port Engineer, and Director of Operations in maintaining compliance with all regulatory agencies and safety regulations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of Bowhead Transport’s vessel fleet and shore side rolling stock, and equipment.
Summary : The Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager for Alaska is responsible for ensuring the organization’s compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards while addressing the unique regulatory and operational challenges of Alaska. This role involves managing relationships with state and federal agencies, such as ADEC, EPA, USCG, and Alaska Chadux Network, while promoting a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
The HSE Manager collaborates with internal teams and external stakeholders to mitigate risks, prevent incidents, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities :
Develop and maintain health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures in line with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify and mitigate hazards.Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning.Coordinate HSE training programs to ensure all employees are knowledgeable about safety protocols and environmental compliance.Monitor and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory standardsPrepare and submit required environmental and safety reports to regulatory agencies. State of Alaska (ADEC), USCG, ABS (American Bureau of Shipping)Promote a culture of safety and environmental awareness through engagement and communication initiatives. Control of Work Processes.Collaborate with operations teams to integrate HSE considerations into daily activities and project planning. Knowledge and Critical Skills / Expertise :
Proven experience in marine engineering and heavy equipment repair & maintenanceProficiency in general PC operations, including spreadsheet software and word processing software, and familiarity with MS Office Suite.At least two (2) years of hands-on experience operating vessels measuring 50 feet or longer.Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the marine cargo industry.Effective communication and leadership abilities.Familiar with remote locations across Alaska.Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.Problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to addressing technical challenges.Possess a valid Driver’s License.Resident of Anchorage, Alaska, Seward or Kenai Pen the surrounding area is preferred.Qualifications
Required Experience :
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Environmental Science, Safety Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).Proven experience inStrong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations.Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.Physical Demands :
The work environment varies and includes, but is not limited to, shipyards, docks, ports, bays, beaches, waterways, office space, equipment rooms, warehouse space, construction zones, and outdoor environments.Work hours may fluctuate outside of regular duty hours. While performing the duties of this job.Willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may extend beyond standard office hours (8-5), particularly during the primary operating season (April – October), with many weeks exceeding 50 hours.Willingness to travel to remote locations across Alaska as needed.Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or workspace utilizing computer phones and office supplies.Required to sit for prolonged periods during travel by plane or automobile.Frequently required to stand and walk and routinely required to reach with hands and arms.Routinely required to stand, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and squat. o Frequently lifts and moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and moves up to 75 pounds. o Occasionally lifts and moves 75-100 pounds with the assistance of deckhands and heavy lifting equipment.Ability to remain composed under pressure and handle the mental and physical demands, working in potentially hazardous situations and unpredictable weather conditions.Environmental Conditions :
5% Office environment, 95% possibility of travel in Central / Western Alaska.
