Position Summary
The incumbent, independently, or in coordination with other Radiation Therapists(s) in the department performs simulation procedures and delivers ionizing radiation therapy to patients, in accordance with the written prescription and instructions provided by the Radiation Oncology physician, and the treatment plan as prepared by the Physicist staff. The Chief Radiation Therapist will coordinate day to day activities of the radiation therapists and will perform technical and supervisory duties in the Radiation Therapy department, enforcing established departmental and hospital policies and procedures in order to provide high quality and efficient patient care. Is required to demonstrate leadership and ability to make decisions and solve problems as they arise.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides daily, direct supervision of the Radiation Therapists’ performance and the treatment delivery process to ensure timely, safe, efficient and cost-effective patient care.
- Collaborates with Physicians, Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nursing and support staff to plan and implement corrective actions in order to improve treatment delivery standards.
- Assist staff in identifying and solving problems within the clinic. Maintains interpersonal and professional relations with staff.
- Coordinates chart rounds and monitors compliance with departmental as well as regulatory policies and guidelines.
- Creates a daily treatment schedule that provides the appropriate time for each patient set-up, resulting in the minimum wait time prior to the patient visit.
- Maintains a daily accurate and complete patient record of radiation therapy treatments.
- Follows all Federal, State, and Medical Center Safety precautions and guidelines for working in a certified radiation area.
- Follows all University, Medical Center, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Participates in a departmental Quality Assurance program and related activities.
- Performs daily equipment warm up, documentation procedures.
- Maintains inventory and restocking of supplies.
- Demonstrates professional and consistent customer service skills when working with patients, family members, significant others, coworkers, and other Medical Center staff and vendors.
- Performs initial set-up checks on complex patients for Radiation Therapist I and Radiation Therapist II staff.
- Monitors the progress, maintains proper documentation and record keeping of Radiation Therapist I, Radiation Therapist II staff and agency staff.
- Works on special clinical, equipment and quality improvement projects at the direction of the Radiation Oncology Director.
- Assists the Radiation Oncology Director in the orientation and education of the Medical Residents.
- Assumes the leadership role in the absence of the Radiation Oncology Director.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement, quality concerns or risk issues, and brings them to the attention of the Radiation Oncology Director and/or Risk Management.
- Ensures that charts are assembled on a timely basis and contains the following information: set- up photographs, field photographs, face photo, and other required records/reports/test results.
- Performs weekly verification of patient treatment site(s) to ensure ongoing accuracy.
- Coordinates timely requisition, receipt, care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Participates in the hiring process, provides orientation, on-going training and education, assists in performance evaluation, implements disciplinary actions, and other related activities.
- Serves as the staff advocate by actively supporting and encouraging open, honest staff participation in the decision making processes and in conflict resolution.
- Performs audits to ensure accuracy in billing practices in accordance to with departmental policies.
