Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals. Duties & Responsibilities • Completes required orientation program and unit-specific competencies. • Assists in Neonatal Stabilization and Resuscitation at time of infant delivery. • Performs and documents initial infant assessment, anthropometric measures and identification of infants. • Assists in infant transfer from Delivery room to Mother Baby Unit or to NICU. • Obtains initial and ongoing labs for infants in in the Labor & Delivery, Mother Baby Units and other units as assigned. • Secures IV placement for infants in Labor & Delivery, Mother Baby Units and other units as assigned. • Administers initial infant medications as ordered by physician team. • Promotes, assists with and documents initial and ongoing skin-to-skin care and breastfeeding throughout hospital stay. • Verifies resuscitation equipment is available and ready for use in each delivery room, operating room and other units as assigned. • Responds to all Obstetrical/Neonatal Emergencies to assist with infant care as assigned. • Provides comfort/bereavement care to infants and families • Assists with the care of infants whose family is unable to provide care, including but not limited to infants of mothers in psychiatric care or infants awaiting adoption placement. • Assists in the care of late preterm infants to decrease separation of mother and baby dyad. Communicates with NICU team if NICU transfer is necessary and/or for further evaluation. • Initiates post-discharge phone calls as assigned. • Provides discharge education for families as assigned. • Develops, implements and updates the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment of the patient and input from the patient’s family. • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant and/or advance practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record. • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities and responds to patient’s changing needs. • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback • Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and effective communication in an effort to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment. •

Performing 24hr of life testing such as CCHD screening, Newborn Screen draw, Hearing Screen. Assisting with infant care in Mother & Baby or NICU.
