JOB TITLE: Preschool Teacher
WORK DAYS: 10 Months; 206 Days (Including Holidays & Basic Vacation Days)
SUMMARY: The Preschool Program with Ukiah Unified School District is designed to provide a safe, enriched environment for children ages three to pre-kindergarten. The program provides a classroom atmosphere for children to interact socially and academically in preparation to successfully attend kindergarten. Students are given age appropriate activities along with both structured and unstructured play times. The Preschool Teacher is directly responsible for the classroom activities. The Preschool Site Coordinator works together with the Preschool Teacher and provides support to the Teacher and the program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. - Designs, implements, and coordinates the instructional program for the State Preschool.
- Promotes the well-being of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
- Accountable for policy decisions based on compliance with State grant guidelines and Community Care licensing regulations.
- Effectively models appropriate instructional and teaching techniques for the benefit of the paraprofessionals assigned to the program.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals and evaluate the job performance in accordance with State guidelines.
- Plans a program of study that is appropriate to meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for all projects, lessons and communicate these objectives clearly to staff, students, and parents.
- Employs instructional methods and materials most appropriate for meeting program guidelines.
- Assesses the accomplishment of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings/services as required. Conducts parent/family conferences.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application)
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Early childhood curriculum and appropriate methods for implementation and assessment.
- General developmental stages, needs and characteristics of preschool aged children.
- Conflict resolution techniques.
- First Aid, good health and safety practices.
ABILITY TO:
- Read, write and speak English sufficiently to successfully perform required duties.
- Hear, speak and write to receive and exchange information.
- Direct the activities of and supervise preschool aged students.
- Plan, organize and implement approved curriculum.
- Maintain a clean, safe, attractive and positive learning environment.
- Demonstrate cross-cultural sensitivity and respect.
- Develop positive relationships with students and parents.
- Obtain before the end of the initial probationary period, and maintain thereafter, as a condition for ongoing employment in this class, a State of California Food Handler’s Permit.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/ AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and
- EITHER completion of at least 24 semester units of coursework in child development or early child education and at least 16 semester units in general education, and at least 175 days (at 3 hours per day) of experience in a childcare and development program;
- OR an Associate’s degree, or higher, in early childhood education or child development or a related field, and at least three (03) units of supervised field experience in an early childhood education setting
- Have and maintain First Aid and C.P.R. certificates as an ongoing condition for employment in this class.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.)
- Participates in physical activities with toddlers age three years to pre-kindergarten.
- Capable of standing for long periods of time, sitting at small tables, lifting 50 lbs., stooping, reaching overhead and bending at the waist.
- May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and minor contagious illnesses such as colds, flu, conjunctivitis, head lice, etc., that may occasionally appear in a school environment.
