JOB TITLE: Utility Bus/Delivery Driver LEVEL: H
WORK DAYS: 10 Months; 202 Days DIVISION: Transportation

SUMMARY:
Under general supervision and general direction of the Superintendent or designee, the Utility Bus/Delivery
Driver drives a school bus or other district vehicles and transports students over designated routes and/or stores, distributes, and picks up a variety of mail, educational supplies, food, materials and equipment. This classification is distinguished from others in the series in that there will be no set schedule or route. The Utility Bus/Delivery
Driver will be assigned temporarily to different duties as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Drives a school bus or other district vehicle over designated routes in all weather conditions according to established time schedules.
- Transports students and school staff on special events, athletic trips, and other field trips.
- Maintains order among students on the bus following Federal, State and district policies and regulations.
- Assists handicapped students in boarding or leaving bus and escorts students with street crossings at bus stops as needed.
- Performs safety inspection of vehicle prior to operation (typically 30 minutes before first trip of the day).
- Monitors vehicles daily by completing Pre-Trip Inspection Report form.
- Reports mechanical defects and needed repairs.
- Cleans/washes vehicle interior and exterior, windows and mirrors as needed.
- Keeps records and prepares routine reports (e.g., student citations, duty hours log sheet, special education logs, behavior logs, etc.).
- Operates two-way radio system.
- Attends safety meetings and programs.
- Contacts parents regarding student behavior and discipline matters.
- Conducts yearly bus evacuation drills.
- May render first aid to passengers, following prescribed safety and first aid procedures.
- Picks up and delivers prepared food and hot ovens to schools.
- Operates a one-ton truck with box-type bed.
- Operates a forklift.
- Picks up, sorts and delivers mail to schools and other sites.
- Operates postage machine.
- Picks up and delivers instructional supplies, equipment and furniture.
- Performs warehouse duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application)
KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:
- Traffic laws and safe driving practices including those pertaining to the operation of a school bus
transporting children.
- Methods and procedures of receiving, storing, loading and distributing supplies, products and equipment.
- Simple record management procedures.
- Appropriate interaction with students, parents, staff, school administrators, the general public, law enforcement, etc.
- Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
- Operate a school bus safely, efficiently, on time, and in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
- Establish and maintain order on a school bus or other district vehicle and appropriate interaction with students.
- Learn a variety of prescribed bus and delivery routes;
- Follow oral and written instructions;
- Keep records and prepare reports;
- Learn and carry out prescribed safety checks, bus evacuation drills and other emergency procedures.
- Learn and follow applicable procedures for driving students with special needs.
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, parents, administrators, District employees and the general public; accurately convey to mechanic symptoms and issues requiring roadside service.
- Operate a two-way radio or other communication equipment assigned to the vehicle.
- Remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
- Operate a computerized device as needed.
- Follow written and oral instructions and to learn and remember locations, routes and procedures.
- Work in an environment that requires flexibility, as the workplace setting, and particular job duties may vary day-to-day.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Possess and maintains as a condition of ongoing employment, a Class C Driver’s license and insurability.
- Possess or obtain within first 5 months of hire, and maintain current as a condition for ongoing employment, a valid California Class B, or higher, Driver’s License with California Special Driver
Certificate endorsement; passenger endorsement and air brake endorsement; a valid Federal Medical examiner’s Certificate; a good driving record.
- Passing required, initial and subsequent random, drug and alcohol screenings, and passing pre- employment oral and/or written examination(s).
- Possess, and maintain as condition for ongoing employment, First Aid and CPR certifications as required by DMV and CHP to operate a school bus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Speak, read and understand sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from students, parents, supervisors/administrators, co-workers, the public, and to ensure proper student behavior during transportation, etc.
- Must have the physical ability to perform assigned duties, including sitting for long periods of time.
- Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds, carry, climb, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, walk and perform demanding physical tasks.
- Must have the physical strength/agility sufficient to perform a wide variety of frequent physical tasks including moving equipment/furniture, lifting, stooping and bending.
- Successful passage of post offer/pre-employment physical required.
