Job Description

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Advocacy Manager. This is a hybrid opportunity based in our Washington, DC office.

The Senior Advocacy Manager will join in leading partnership and engagement initiatives to advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Senior Advocacy Manager will execute the strategic direction for government engagement at the state and local level, working closely with local policymakers, governing bodies and other stakeholders to enable the global utilization of safety standards and amplify the growth of our standards development work.

Essential Functions, Roles, And Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies to influence state and local policies aligned with ULSE’s critical focus areas of battery safety, fire and electrification. Develop and execute approach to capitalize on identified opportunities and drive the organization’s expansion and influence within the safety standards landscape.
  • Establish and advance robust relationships with governmental and non-governmental entities, including legislators, regulators, industry leaders, fire safety professionals, and advocacy groups to advance ULSE’s public policy priorities.
  • Serve as a thought leader and represent ULSE within the state and local region at key meetings, forums, symposia, and conferences. Elevate our safety advocacy work through advocacy events, presentations, roundtables, panel participation, and other platforms to educate and advance standards initiatives.
  • Identify communications needs and development relevant content and materials specific to the state or region.
  • Scope and lead end-to-end project plans, ensure deadlines are met and actively manage milestones and priorities.
  • Develop and track internal operating metrics associated with state and local engagement.
  • Maintain continued awareness of industry trends as well as legislative and regulatory developments, offering insight to inform strategic decisions and direction of the standards engagement function.
  • Contribute to department initiatives as needed

Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated advanced level knowledge in legislative and regulatory processes at the state and local levels, implementing public policy strategies and interacting professionally in a public policy environment.
  • Established leader with experience executing strategy and achieving tangible results. Able to set strategic direction, interpret, support, and execute organizational strategy while effectively translating objectives into actionable plans and driving successful execution.
  • Deep understanding and subject matter expertise in state and local government engagement and policy regulations landscape.
  • Strong project management skills, effectively leading end-to-end project planning and execution, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Excellent communicator and presenter, skilled in conflict mediation, negotiation and influencing diverse stakeholders. Proven capability in coalition building and establishing effective relationships with others, including senior leaders and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to foster collaboration and partnership with cross-functional teams to develop solutions with broad impact.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to innovate and adapt in a dynamic industry landscape.

Experience And Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 9 years of related work experience.
  • Experience in government relations, public policy, or advocacy with focus on state and local government engagement.
  • Familiarity with trade associations, safety standards, public safety, or regulatory sectors highly desirable
