Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Researcher at UL Research Institutes, based in our Marietta, Georgia office.

The Post-doctoral researcher performs independent research in preparation for a career as a scientific professional, contributing to and advancing health and human safety research of the Chemical Insights Research Institute (CIRI). The post-doctoral researcher will assist in initiating the design, development, execution, and implementation of consumer safety research projects. Conducts experiments, modeling, and analysis to provide accurate data and information with the goal of developing that information into peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and on-line educational programs.

This two-year Post-doctoral researcher position is focused on addressing concerns related to advancements in consumer products and technologies that may impact human health. Topic areas include physicochemical characterization of particle and chemical emissions stemming from electronic nicotine delivery systems or e-cigarettes, 3D printers, determining the biological activity and toxicological profiles of aerosols using in vitro model systems, inhalation dosimetry, molecular epidemiology and the development of novel measurement methodologies assessing hazards within vulnerable populations.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Post-Doctoral Researcher you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Conduct primary research and literature reviews to analyze consumer safety incident data and laboratory test results.

  • Applies knowledge ofscientific principles to the specific research tasks.

  • Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad research concepts, guiding the analysis of unique problems, and developing new and improved techniques and methods.

  • Assume primary responsibility for development of independent research. Assist with experiments, data collection, evaluations, and support researchers on projects; analyze results.

  • Plan, design and complete initial and follow up procedures as needed to test and validate results.

  • Perform research to a high standard and in accordance with all institutional and federal regulations.

  • Collaborate with ULRI colleagues and universities.

  • Contribute to and participate in webinars, conference presentations, writing papers for journal publications, facilitate training programs.

Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of bench-scale and full-scale toxicological research practices and instrumentation including aseptic technique, protein and DNA extraction, PCR, cell culture, in vitro toxicological assays, ELISA, IHC, next generation sequencing (NGS), and cell imaging.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of inhalation and dermal dosimetry in the context of chemical and particle ability to perform independent research and support publication.

  • Ability to support research in chemistry lab environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain academic and applied knowledge and skills. Ability to collaborate with peers and work directly with other team members and external collaborators in order to complete a project from start to finish. Excellent report, publication, presentation and general communication skills required.

  • High Proficiency with MS Office, MATLAB, Excel, GraphPad and PowerPoint Proficiency with R, SAS, and Python is a plus.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • PhD in Toxicology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or other related field conferred within three years of application or completion of Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

  • Experience working in a chemistry or toxicology lab required.
