Purpose :
The school nurse provides health services in schools and other educational settings in support of students with chronic illnesses
and disabilities and promotes health-related habits and ensures compliance with national and local health policies for schools.
A high degree of organizational skills and attention to detail are required along with the ability to work with a wide range of
professionals in the school setting and community. The school nurse must be able to communicate effectively and work
independently within the established professional guidelines in a timely manner.
I. Essential Functions :
A. Confer with a variety of personnel (e.g., administrators, teachers, related service providers, community members, etc.)
in assigned local districts in order to assist them in the provision of healthcare services for qualified students.
B. Provide basic healthcare to students with acute or chronic health problems to enable them to participate in school
activities safely.
C. Assist with vision / hearing screenings.
D. Educate students and staff on healthy habits, such as proper nutrition and hygiene.
E. Update students' medical history and obtain prescriptions for the current healthcare plan.
F. Advise school administrators on creating a safe school environment for children and school staff (e.g., prevention of
communicable diseases).
G. Stay current on national and local health regulations.
H. Advise staff and students in performing activities within the guidelines of healthcare plans.
I. Follow and teach the protocols of universal precautions to staff and students as necessary.
J. Maintain health records including vital signs of the student.
K. Administer care for a student in the event of an accident or sudden illness.
L. Report to supervising teachers and / or administrators any problems or questions regarding the assigned students and
their healthcare needs in the educational setting.
M. Be aware of and follow all policies and regulations of the assigned school district(s) and Keystone.
N. Be aware of and follow all policies and regulations regarding the confidentiality of student information.
O. Attend meetings when your presence is requested by the school principal, special education teacher, or Keystone
administration.
P. Follow / Implement the health care plan and Individualized Education Plan of the student.
Q. Collaborate with the school to administer medication and maintain appropriate documentation.
R. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
II. Job Requirements : Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to
meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job
include : using healthcare assessments; operating specialized equipment used in the treatment of medical diagnosis; operating
standard office equipment including pertinent computer software; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and / or ratios; review and
interpret highly technical information, write technical reports, and / or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and
analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily
perform the functions of the job include : anatomy and physiology associated with medical diagnosis; principles and practices
of nursing; and pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and / or events; gather, collate, and / or classify data; and use job related
equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; and work with data
using defined but different processes. Ability is also required to work with diverse individuals and / or groups; and work with
data of widely varied types and / or purposes. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action
plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with
equipment is significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include :

IV. Work Environment :
The usual and customary methods of performing the job`s functions require the following physical demands : occasional lifting
and carrying up to twenty (20) pounds, some pushing, and / or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling
and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 35% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed
in a generally hazard free environment.
