Overview

The role of a Laboratory Animal Caretaker is crucial to maintaining the well-being and proper handling of laboratory animals. This position plays a vital role in supporting the research and development of scientific studies by ensuring the appropriate care, health, and living conditions of animals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care and maintenance for laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, and cleaning housing areas
  • Monitor and report animal behavior, health, and conditions to research staff
  • Follow proper procedures for handling, restraining, and transporting animals
  • Assist in administering medications and treatments as directed by veterinary staff
  • Ensure that animal housing environments and equipment are clean and in good condition
  • Participate in the handling and restraint of animals for research procedures
  • Assist in the identification and record-keeping of animals
  • Perform general facility maintenance and sanitation tasks
  • Adhere to animal welfare regulations and guidelines
  • Collaborate with research staff to ensure the welfare of laboratory animals

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience in animal care, preferably in a laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and animal handling techniques
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols
  • Physical ability to lift and move heavy objects and stand for extended periods
  • Good observational and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to report observations accurately
  • Understanding of animal welfare regulations and ethical considerations
  • Ability to maintain clean and sanitary work environments
