What are the responsibilities and job description for the Waterfront Site Program Assistant position at UMass Boston, Recreation?
UMass Boston Athletics and Recreation is seeking a leader to manage and oversee our Waterfront Recreation Program at the Fox Point Dock on the UMB Campus. We are offering Kayaking, Rowboating, Stand-up Paddleboard (SUP) and limited Sailing for student, faculty/staff and the community. The ideal candidate is organized, self-motivated, team oriented and adaptable. In addition, he/she must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as exhibit a mature and professional demeanor. The Program Assistant should be customer focused and comfortable speaking with students, staff and community members. Duties are listed below:
- Open and close the site: appx 10:30AM – 6:30PM during waterfront operations from late May to late September. The waterfront main operating season is Wednesday-Sundays during the summer.
- Oversee and Manage reservations, equipment, and program schedules through Fusion software.
- Provide clear, effective, and timely communication with staff.
- Manage a team of up to 6 employees (dock employees, check in staff, sailing instructors) including staff scheduling.
- Assist with lesson scheduling and oversight.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization at our public access dock and quarterbarge.
- Lead all staff and participants through our established emergency management procedure in the event emergencies occur.
- Monitor weather and make decisions regarding inclement weather in cooperation with leadership staff.
- Approve daily float plans, and as needed, discuss ways to execute their plans effectively or safely.
- Report problems and troubleshoot equipment that needs maintenance and upkeep.
- Assist the public with kayak, rowboat, sailboat, and paddleboard rental.
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications are listed below:
- Experience operating a powerboat, US Powerboat Safe Handling certification or MA Environmental Police preferred but not required.
- Current US Sailing Level 1 Certification (or willing to obtain; may be eligible for reimbursement).
- Minimum 2 years sailing instructor experience is preferred.
- Excellent organization and time-management skills.
- Able to work effectively with a wide variety of age groups and populations from diverse backgrounds, role modeling inclusive behavior and building positive group culture.
- Comfortable giving and receiving feedback to and from peers, participants, and supervisors.
- Able to build rapport easily with participants and co-workers.
- Comfortable working outdoors, regardless of weather.
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude.
- Strong computer skills and comfortable learning online tools and software.
- Ideal candidates will have a high level of comfort around the water.

Additional Salary Information: The Program Assistant will work full time during the summer hours as labeled above (Wednesday through Sunday) to be a key figure in running the waterfront operation. This is temporary full time work during summer months to support waterfront operations and is not a position that carries past the water season (anticipated closing is the end of September).
