Job Summary
The Certified Surgical First Assistant assists the surgeon in the care of patients during surgery by performing such duties as prepping the patient, cauterizing, suturing, clamping, or removing scar tissue.
Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to :
- Perform preoperative duties such as prepare the room, test operational equipment, prepare supplies and instruments to be used by the surgeon
- Immobilize patients on the operating table
- Place clamps and sutures
- Assist with patient suction, drainage, and irrigation
- Assist surgeon with close of procedure; Close skin with adhesives, sutures, staples, etc.
- Assist with room turnover
- Assist in checking and restocking assigned surgical site
- All other assigned duties related to surgical services

This position will interact patients, their families, physicians, and various hospital staff in various departments
Physical Capabilities
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds. Position requires standing for extended periods of time. Near visual acuity to read gauges or dials on equipment and distinguish micro equipment is required. Color vision for perceiving changes in patient's skin color, colors of medicines and solutions.
Environmental / Working Conditions
This position is subject varying indoor temperature changes. Work done intraoperative is performed in a high- risk area for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
