Environmental / Working Conditions
The Courier positions typically involve the internal environment of a vehicle, shuttle bus or courier van and driving conditions on city streets and highways . The Courier is expected to walk short distances for delivery of hospital related items. Couriers may be called upon to assist riders in and out of vehicles.
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
This position requires interaction with other drivers, medical staff, ancillary areas and patients directly in order to facilitate a quality multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
Job Description
There are 4 distinct roles in the Courier Line of service. All applicants should inquire which position they are applying for. These positions, at times, overlap to maintain the flexibility of staffing and running a successful Courier Service to the support of UMC.
1. Courier I: UMC Shuttle driver. This driver mans the UMC campus shuttle and delivers patients, customers, family and visitors to their desired location on site. Delivery location also includes the TTUHSC side of the campus. Work is entirely inside of the UMC Shuttle Bus.
2. MOP Courier: This courier drives either the designated van or golf cart and escorts patients, customers and visitors to the nearby clinics and sites on the UMC campus. This position may also include an indoor delivery route of mail and labs for the UMC clinics in MOP I and MOP II.
3. Courier: This position entails a route to the outlying UMC clinics with delivery and pickup of hospital related items. There are in town and out of town routes up to a 30 mile radius.
4. Patient Discharge Home Courier: This position entails escorting patients that meet a specific criteria to their home by wheelchair van. This position has a minimum 30 mile radius and jobs can be scheduled further at the discretion of the Courier Coordinator.
Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations
University Medical Center will provide necessary training. CPR, Safe Patient Handling and Safe Driving Education are all provided by NSS.
Physical Capabilities
The Courier must be emotionally and physically fit. Work requires much driving, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and transporting of specimens, medications, supplies, records, paperwork, and equipment.
The work is of high risk for exposure to Biological and Chemical hazards
Skills and Abilities
The Courier should possess good written and verbal communication skills; should be knowledgeable of the physical layout of the UMC/TTHSC Complex; UMC clinics and follow established procedures and practices related to the position. Customer Service with all guest is first and foremost and safety on all levels is required. Service is our passion at all times.
