JOB SUMMARY:This position includes development, supervision, and coordination of all the activities of pharmacy services. The Director of Pharmacy assumes the responsibility for the day-to-day operation and administration of the pharmacy department. This includes but is not limited to: direct supervision over all pharmacy personnel, personnel functions, departmental performance improvement, and production functions. The Director of Pharmacy ensures that the department meets all legal, regulatory, and accreditation/certification requirements. In addition, the Director of Pharmacy shall ensure that the department complies with all applicable hospital policies, procedures, and standards. The Director of Pharmacy serves on various clinical, performance improvement, and oversight committees, and is actively involved in those committees responsible for establishing medication-related policies and procedures. The Director of Pharmacy must also function as a staff pharmacist as the need arises.
REPORTS TO: Chief Pharmacy Officer
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains an accurate and complete inventory of controlled substances.
- Reviews all medication errors and identifies opportunities to improve medication safety.
- Provides financial analyses to Vice President on a monthly basis and as requested.
- Interacts regularly with IT to improve the pharmacy computer software.
- Manages all pharmacy operations according to legal and regulatory standards including JCAHO,
- Maximizes Patient Assistance Program collections.
- Enhances pharmacy's clinical presence in direct patient care areas.
- Ensures that pharmacists enter all drug orders in the e-MAR completely and accurately.
- Manages 340-B, GPO, and WAC purchases/inventory in a manner consistent with all applicable
- Maintains inpatient and outpatient formularies in a cost-effective manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or Pharm. D. degree in Pharmacy. A minimum of three years progressive experience in a supervisory capacity with demonstrated managerial integrity, ability, and leadership in a hospital setting of relevant size and complexity. Must have a Texas Pharmacist license in good standing.
REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:
- Registration by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy
- Certificate in sterile compounding
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good verbal and written communication skills in English are necessary. A working knowledge of the total hospital organization, a general knowledge of nursing and pharmacy theory and practice, and familiarity with individual department functions is required. Must also have a thorough knowledge of pharmacy law and procedures and be knowledgeable about computers and medical terminology. Must have strong leadership and managerial skills as well. The ability to establish and maintain professional, ethical, and effective working relationships with all professionals, paraprofessionals, and the general public is also necessary. Must be able to manipulate moderately complex arithmetic problems.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:
Must interact closely with the medical staff, nursing service, and other ancillary departments in order to facilitate a safe and effective medication use program. Interacts with the drug wholesaler and is responsive to the Texas State board of Pharmacy, DEA, DPS, and other legal and regulatory bodies.
PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:
Work is basically sedentary. Daily walking about the office and through various areas of the hospital. Near visual acuity required.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Generally subject to indoor conditions. Hours may be long and irregular, depending on departmental needs. Must be able to respond to departmental needs after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
