Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Secretary-General is responsible for the investment of the assets of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The Secretary-General has delegated this responsibility to the Representative of the Secretary-General for the investment of the assets of the UNJSPF (RSG). The RSG heads the Office of Investment Management (OIM), which manages approximately $95 billion multi-asset class, global investment portfolio, about 85% of which is actively managed in-house. Asset classes under management comprise of global equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, private equity, real estate, infrastructure, timber, and commodities. This position is located in the Asia Pacific Team within the Public Equities Section of the Office of Investment Management (OIM) of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The incumbent will report to the Senior Investment Officer (SIO) of the Asia Pacific Team, who reports directly to the Director of Public Equities.

Responsibilities

  • Within delegated authority, and under the supervision of the SIO, the incumbent:
  • Implements investment strategy and monitors equity portfolios for the Asia Pacific developed markets including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Manages and invests the assets of the Fund in equities.
  • Implements approved investment strategies for the strategic and tactical asset allocation and portfolio re-balancing with careful review of market environments.
  • Monitors portfolio to achieve the performance to meet the Fund’s investment objectives by reviewing both portfolio and benchmark performance on a regular basis.
  • Ensures that all of the investments are in compliance with OIM's investment and policy guidelines.
  • Conducts portfolio reviews periodically and presents at Portfolio Review Meetings.
  • Balances long-term strategies to achieve results superior to benchmarks by assisting the SIO in constructing and monitoring the portfolio through dedicated research.
  • Assists with due diligence for new investments.
  • Conducts careful and thorough investment research that is relevant to managing the Asia Pacific portfolios, using various tools and incorporating qualitative as well as quantitative factors, including but not limited to, environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects.
  • Performs fundamental analysis through financial statements, corporate announcements, market news and other publicly available information.
  • Reviews investment research and discusses with strategists, economists, and security analysts through brokerage community.
  • Engages with senior members of corporate management to review their business and corporate strategies.
  • Conducts portfolio analysis using risk tools and analytical tools.
  • Conducts sector/thematic research and updates fundamentals of companies and industries.
  • Makes specific investment recommendations and ensures the Fund's four investments criteria: safety, profitability, liquidity, and convertibility.
  • Makes specific investment recommendations to achieve optimum investment performance with careful review of the portfolio's investment objectives and risk tolerance.
  • Presents and discusses investment recommendations to the SIO.
  • Reporting: assists the SIO in reporting accurately and in a timely manner to the Representative of the Secretary-General for the Investments of the UNJSPF and the CIO of OIM when requested.
  • Assists the CIO of OIM in reporting on investment and related matters to governing bodies.
  • Serves as the Officer In Charge when required in the absence of the SIO.
  • Participates in seminars and taking courses in investment topics.
  • Keeps abreast of rapidly changing techniques of portfolio management and exchanging views with colleagues and members of the investment community.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in Business and Administration (MBA), Finance, Economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or equivalent is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in investment analysis and investment management in equities covering markets in developed Asia/Pacific with a focus on Japan is required. Institutional, buy-side experience in directly recommending equity long-only investments is desirable. Experience in portfolio management with an emphasis on buy-side is desirable. Strong analytical skills and experience producing customized earnings models is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Fluency in Japanese is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
