Fraternity and Sorority Life provides students opportunities to engage in leadership development, organizational skills, and the invaluable personal growth that comes from involvement in a fraternity or sorority.

Primary Purpose of Position
Student Engagement creates student learning and development opportunities that inspire campus involvement and civic engagement. Units are comprised of The Center for Leadership Development and Volunteer Outreach, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Involvement, Student Niner Media, Venture Outdoor Leadership, Popp Martin Student Union, and the Bonnie E. Cone University Center.

The Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life is a professional staff member in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life who coordinates a variety of campus-wide programs and services. The Assistant Director will work directly with Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) leadership development and will serve as one of three full-time staff members working in Fraternity and Sorority Life. Within each program area, staff members are directly involved in student group advising, assessment, programming, leadership training and development, and teaching in addition to coordinating services and programs for other defined student populations.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
  • Advise 2-3 student council groups and the organizations that fall under those councils.
  • Develop programs, strategies, and partnerships to promote a cross-campus, data-driven education system on risk reduction topics, including education on sexual assault, interpersonal violence, alcohol, hazing, and risk reduction.
  • Oversee the Standards Program, managing collection, review, and reporting of the annual assessment of chapter development.
  • Coordinate and oversee various programs within the office regarding chapter management, recruitment, new member education, as well as supervise and attend all major office and council programming.
  • Serve as a liaison to more than inter/national fraternities and sororities, alumni/ae advisors, and more than 41 undergraduate chapters regarding chapter operations, extension/expansion, university policies, discipline cases, and other relevant issues.
  • Directly advise and support executive board officers and delegates of the advisee Council(s) and work closely with presidents, other chapter leadership, and council executive members.
  • Develop curriculum and teach leadership and educational programs for individual chapters, chapter officers, and the Greek Community (presidents’ meetings, chapter officer training, etc).
  • Responsible for all office assessments including development, tracking, and data analytics for a major program and individual leadership opportunities.
  • Serve on committees and represent The Office at University functions including the Niner Nation Gives Committee, Honors and Awards Committee, Careers in Student Affairs Committee, and others as assigned.
  • Supervise one Graduate Assistant and/or Undergraduate Intern (along with the other Assistant Director, and Summer Intern for Fraternity and Sorority Life.)

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or related area is required.
  • Degree must be attained by time of proposed start date.
  • At least one year of professional work experience in higher education including direct involvement with Fraternity and Sorority Life (or Two years of Graduate Assistantship Work).

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge and practice of student development theory, counseling and advising practices, current fraternity and sorority issues, and risk management policies.
  • Ability to organize, implement, and evaluate student programs and educational work with in depth assessment.
  • Experience in advising Greek letter organizations and culturally based Greek groups.
  • Membership in a Greek-letter organization desirable.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop/enhance the educational and social value for fraternities and sororities.
  • Able to articulate the educational value and outcomes of fraternities and sororities.
  • Able to articulate the ways in which sororities and fraternities create and support belonging within the college community.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships to support the F/S community
  • Able to demonstrate approaches used to building community and educating college students.
  • Embraces a “progress not perfection” approach when working with college students and understanding that every situation provides a teachable moment.
  • Demonstrates ability to navigate complex systems while building relationships across various stakeholder groups.
  • Can communicate with clarity, direction, and conviction in person, in written communication, and in virtual spaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with clarity and direction.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocating for the student experience while also supporting institutional and divisional priorities and initiatives.
  • Approaches the work with a positive, collaborative attitude that creates spaces for support, encouragement, and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to be administratively sound with tasks and projects.
