Primary Purpose of Position
Performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations. Receives emergent and non emergent calls, monitors alarms, obtains and relays information, prioritizescalls/alarms and coordinates response procedures, dispatches appropriate public safety personnel, and maintains public safety communications logs and databases.
Minimum Education/Experience
Minimum Preferred Qualifications:
High School diploma and sufficient experience to demonstrate ability to work under pressure.
Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
University Preferred Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalency and one year experience as a public safety telecommunicator.

Essential Job Duties
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance and information.
- Provides dispatch and communication support services for police (including rangers), fire, emergency, and related services.
- Operates a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, and LiveSafe
- alerting system Translate information to the appropriate codes.
- Determines and assigns the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a
- computer-aided dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes.
- Performs crisis intervention services, ask vital questions to ensure the caller
- receives proper emergency response agency.
- Transfers Fire and Medical needs to appropriate dispatch centers.
- Monitors and operates a radio console and computer equipment.
- Receives and responds to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.
- Asks questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller’s situation as to
- resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer
- callers to other agencies.
- Dispatches and coordinates the responses of public safety agencies.
- Identify appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch.
- Enters and modifies information into local, state and national computer databases.
- Monitors and responds to a variety of technical systems and alarms.
Other Work Responsibilities
- Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or Designee.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
- Previous experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher with 1 year of experience.
- Experience in the performance of general telecommunications duties, including emergency call response, dispatching police, medic, and fire to assist.
- Ability to perform effective under pressure; and understanding of all policy and procedures,
- Ability to effectively use and maintain telecommunication equipment and the ability to effectively perform telecommunications duties.
- Proficiency with computer systems such as Microsoft; Google Suite with ability to learn other computer programs/systems.
- Strong attention to details.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
- Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
- Certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment is required.
