The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute atUNC-CH is one of the medical research institutions working together as a national consortium to improve the way biomedical research is conducted across the country. The consortium, funded through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA), shares a common vision to reduce the time it takes for laboratory discoveries to become treatments for patients, and to engage communities in clinical research efforts. The Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CTRC) is a program of the TraCS Institute within the home of theUNCSchool of Medicine. TheCTRCprovides both inpatient and outpatient clinical services to support a wide variety of research studies involving human subjects with an array of investigators representing the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing and others.
The primary purpose of this Registered Nurse position is to provide nursing services with a focus on the care of participants who volunteer for clinical research studies conducted primarily in an ambulatory setting. The RN will provide specialized, professional nursing care to research subjects for healthy volunteers and to those with unusual and distinctive medical problems according to federal regulations, Good Clinical Practice, and local and institutional polices. The RN will support study implementation within the context of care delivery settings such as in the NC TraCS’s Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) andUNCMedical Center as well as provide research on location services atUNCHeath clinics and hospitals, and the Schools ofUNC. The RN will provide management of clinical and research support activities in order to assure patient safety, address clinical needs and assure protocol integrity and accurate data collection. The RN will ensure the integrity of research data while maintaining care that is safe, efficient, timely, effective, equitable, compassionate and patient-centered.
Job Responsibilities: Care requirements will be determined by the scope of study participation, the clinical condition of the participant and the requirements and clinical effects of research procedures.
Duties will include but are not limited to: providing direct, individualized care to both adult and pediatric research participants who are participating in research protocols, phlebotomy and IV insertion, preparing and administering investigational medications, monitoring and observation, performing ECG’s, collecting and processing specimens, other data collection, providing direction and health teaching where applicable in relation to study protocol activities, reporting and recording care rendered, reporting the participant’s response to that care, charge nurse duties and contributing to the CTRC’s continuous quality improvement program including the training of non-licensed research personnel.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.

- Strong computer skills and have a working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Proficient in intravenous access and/or phlebotomy.
- The individual assuming this position must possess current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing with no restrictions or pending actions.
- Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Visual attention and mental concentration with or without accommodation is required at all times in this capacity due to the clinical nature of the work.
