Description
Peri Anesthesia is a combined Day Surgery and PACU department providing full range of pre/post care to our surgical patients. Each day our nurses admit patients for surgery and provide preop care including admission, medication reconciliation, IV access, education and assisting with placement of peripheral nerve blocks and arterial lines. Throughout the day our nurses also provide Phase I and Phase II recovery care to patients focusing on airway management, pain control, and hemodynamic stability. It is a great unit to be able to learn and utilize critical care skills and provide care to patients of all ages (ACLS and PALS required within 1yr of employment). The patients enjoy a department with a work flow set up around them and focused on continuity of care as the same nurse recovering the patient will typically care for them until discharge or inpatient admission. We provide a variety of services including general surgery, urology, gynecology, ENT, dental, ophthalmology, neurology, orthopedics, vascular, and plastic surgeries.

This individual is an extension of the ERSC staff in providing indirect care for patients and their families during his/her assigned shift. The receptionist also greets patients and families and initiates the paper flow to record all procedures. The receptionist sets the tone and pace for the department and it's daily operation. Communicates with the nursing staff, visitors/families regarding patient information and carrying out assigned receptionist and secretarial duties.

Responsibilities
- Promotes effective communication between patients, staff, physicians, physician's office personnel and visitors.
- Ensures/verifies required demographic, clinical and insurance information is obtained and accurately entered into the computer. Ensures accurate order entry and documentation.
- Ensures adequate office supplies are available.
- Provides prompt, courteous service to all patients arriving for registration and maintain compliance with hospital and departmental procedural standards.
- Schedules all pre-op interviews on surgical, cardiac cath and arteriogram patients. Assembles paperwork and schedules ESWL and TUMT procedures.
- Places identification bracelet on patient and removes when labs are completed, making sure all correct labs were drawn, CXR or EKG done, and red arm bracelet put on by lab if required and within time frame for Type & Screen or Type & Crossmatch.
- Orders lab work for same-day patients upon arrival; receives urine specimen from surgery patients and orders appropriate test, completes label and printed order and sees that it gets to lab in timely manner.
- Operates office machinery, e.g., copier, Fax, labeler/addressograph, etc.
- Changes dates on rescheduled surgeries in computer and then communicates messages to date change, cancellation, reschedule, etc.
- Keeps nurses informed of patients special needs, e.g. wheelchair, walker, hard of hearing, etc.
- Files routing sheets, H&P, orders, etc., from physicians' offices.
- Supports and promotes the WMH guest relations policy.
- Provides ongoing compliance with Worker's Compensation policy.
- Performs other departmental duties as assigned.

- High school graduate or equivalent
- Associate degree in Medical Secretarial Science of related field preferred
- None
- At least one year medical office/medical fields experience
- Ability to provide excellent patient and customer service to all patients and their visitors as well as to internal and external teammates.
- Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with teammates and relate to patients with varying degrees of illness.
- Attention to detail. Ability to set priorities and organize many functions at the same time for an entire unit.
- Flexibility and calmness required in order to perform a variety of functions in a setting which may be stressful or change unexpectedly due to a patient's condition.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
- Able to learn new software rapidly. Knowledge of Epic or EMR is helpful.
- Familiarity with basic medical terminology.
