The Clinical Director for Outpatient Services plays a vital leadership role in overseeing the operations of three key outpatient areas at UNC Medical Center: (1) The UNCH Outpatient Float Pool, (2) The UNCH Outpatient Education and Training program, and (3) The Outpatient practice and compliance program. This position is responsible for ensuring efficient operations and effective leadership within these areas, which include hospital-based and faculty physician clinics and procedure areas.
The Director leads a division of Outpatient Services, ensuring that resources align with organizational goals. They are tasked with setting strategic objectives for their areas of responsibility, developing and executing a comprehensive departmental plan, and providing leadership to direct reports. Additionally, the Clinical Director has fiscal responsibilities, including budget preparation, monitoring financial trends, creating strategies to address budget variances, and identifying opportunities to improve productivity and promote financial stewardship.
The Outpatient Float Pool, supported by two managers and over 100 full-time and per diem clinical staff, ensures adequate staffing for UNC Hospital and Faculty Physician clinics and procedure areas throughout the region. Leadership ensures Float Pool staff maintain compliance with hospital, nursing, and human resources policies and provides reports to leadership on staffing needs and gaps. They also develop policies, tools, and algorithms to optimize Float Pool utilization in clinics and procedural areas.
Outpatient Clinical Education and Training program staff manage the development of competencies and training for both new and experienced clinical staff, including nursing and technical roles. They also lead the creation of new educational initiatives based on regulatory requirements or needs assessments, promote standard work, and encourage teammates to work at the top of their licensure. Program staff collaborate with other departments, including the Center for Nursing Excellence, to ensure comprehensive training and orientation.
Outpatient Practice and Compliance program staff evaluate current clinic policies, practices, and programs to ensure they meet hospital, accreditation, and external standards. This includes reviewing standing orders, scope of practice, and implementing action plans to address any compliance gaps.
Occasional travel to off-site clinics may be required by the Clinical Director.

Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing required for this Clinical Director role; Master's degree strongly preferred
- If a Registered Nurse: Requires licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
- License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina required for this role.
- If Bachelor’s degree, Five (5) years of operations experience in a tertiary care setting, including three (3) years of experience in a supervisory position in a related field. Nursing Management experience strongly preferred for this role.
- If Master’s degree: Three (3) years of professional operations experience in a tertiary care setting with two (2) years in supervisory position in a related field. Nursing Management experience strongly preferred for this role.
- Education and Professional Development experience strongly preferred for this role.
- Understands and applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
