Hospital Based Paramedic needed for Main Emergency Department at UNC Medical Center
The Emergency Department at UNC Medical Center Chapel Hill campus is a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment providing collaborative, evidenced-based, patient-centered emergency services to over 65,000 patients a year. We are a designated Level 1 Adult and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center serving as North Carolina's primary referral hospital as well as serving the surrounding communities of Orange County.
Emergency Department staff collaboratively operate as a unified team across two distinct units – the Main ED (adults) and the Pediatric ED (children) - providing care for patients of all ages from neonates to geriatrics. The UNC Medical Center has a separate, dedicated Psych Emergency Department which works closely with our larger Emergency Department. Full time; 36 hours per week; 12-hour shifts; mid-shift schedule offered
Summary
Works as a member of the Emergency Department clinical team. The paramedic collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to provide appropriate age specific care in compliance with standards of practice in the hospital or urgent care setting. The paramedic will provide care to patients under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Physician. A physician will provide oversight for clinical practice. Skill set approved by NC-OEMS will be utilized.
Responsibilities
Takes directions from nurse, physician and/or advanced practice provider to implement prescribed therapies within scope of practice.
Provides rapid evaluation of presenting patients and communicates to the care team the patient; 1⁄2s required needs/care.
Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes based on these priorities.
Maintains a safe, therapeutic and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting and professional behavior.
Acts as a patient advocate.
Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information.
Utilizes triage skills to assist in prioritizing of incoming ED patients.
Performs basic data collection, prepares patient for exam and communicates findings to primary and/or charge nurse.
Facilitates blood draw and starting of IVs based on orders and in coordination with primary/triage nurse.
Works to their paramedic license; does not give narcotics or perform intubations.
Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed throughout facility.
Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Education Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of OEMS approved training & competency program for Paramedic and current North Carolina Paramedic Certification required.
- Certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS.
- Six months experience in a pre-hospital environment as a Paramedic required.
- Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Incumbent must demonstrate clinical competence per the position’s Skills Checklist before being allowed to perform independently.
