Are you a detail-oriented accounting professional who thrives on precision and purpose? The UND Alumni Association & Foundation is seeking an Accountant to play a key role in maintaining our financial integrity while supporting meaningful philanthropic impact.
In this dynamic role, you’ll go beyond traditional accounting tasks—handling endowments, donor-advised funds, and mineral assets, while also supporting the administration of planned giving vehicles like charitable trusts and gift annuities. Your work will help steward our donors’ generosity and ensure long-term financial health.
POSITION SUMMARY
The position of Accountant plays a vital role in the financial integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for executing and maintaining a wide range of accounting functions with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism. In addition to core accounting duties—such as journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, and audits, the Accountant serves as a key financial resource in the oversight of endowments, donor-advised funds, and other complex financial instruments.
This role is also integral to the administration of the organization’s Planned Giving program. The Accountant will manage the accounting and financial reporting for life income gifts, charitable trusts, gift annuities, and life insurance policies, while also ensuring accurate reporting and stewardship of planned gifts. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting skills, an analytical mindset, and the ability to navigate nuanced financial scenarios in support of both Finance and Development functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
FINANCE
- Prepare the journal entries for Endowment activity, including unitizing and the annual payout.
- Complete annual Endowment and Fund Reporting.
- Prepare complex journal entries and reconciliations for financial statement.
- Manage donor-advised fund (DAF) processes, including financial entries and direct communication with donors.
- Prepare journal entries and maintain records related to mineral interest assets.
- Oversight of the Organization’s property and liability insurance, to include reporting and valuation to the insurance carrier of contents, equipment, arts and antiques.
- Provide assistance with the audit of financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Timely preparation of statements, graphs and other financial information as requested.
PLANNED GIVING
- Assist with the administration of planned giving vehicles, including charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and other life income arrangements.
- Prepare accounting entries for planned gifts, including initial set-up, ongoing valuations, and final close-out of funds.
- Monitor and maintain records for life insurance policies received as charitable gifts; ensure proper tracking and reporting of asset values.
- Coordinate required tax filings and mailing of annual beneficiary reports.
- Manage information received from estates, complete necessary documentation, and follow up with appropriate parties to ensure timely and accurate receipt of estate gifts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Education: Accounting or Business Degree with emphasis in financial or non-profit or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Knowledge in accounting, financial controls and information systems.
PHYSICAL & COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
Ability to operate computers, telephones, and other standard office equipment. Ability to focus and complete work in a timely manner. Ability to travel independently via car and air. Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, squat, and lift or move objects up to 10 pounds.
