JOB DESCRIPTION :
The Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the Public Health Department a 3-year Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant and Substance Use Program (COSSUP) grant in 2023 that funds our Peer Support Specialist program. The Peers are staff who are former addicts, at least 2 years in recovery, who use that experience to assist our addicted residents to get and stay sober. It has been very effective, and our peers are deeply embedded in the UG Drug Court, Community Corrections, as well as our healthcare and nonprofit agencies who treat residents with substance use disorders. This position serves as Project Director for this grant, overseeing the federal award. Specific duties include supervising two (2) full-time Peer Support Specialists; convening and coordinating grant staff and community partners; ensuring all substance misuse prevention activities incorporate a focus on cultural competency and health equity; working with the epidemiologist, PIO and others to assess and communicate timely and important data regarding substance misuse in Wyandotte County; working with evaluator (University of Kansas) to conduct evaluation activities; reporting quarterly progress to the funder; and identifying additional funding opportunities to implement evidence-based strategies to prevent substance misuse & overdoses.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Bachelor's degree in public health, social work or related field and two years of related program experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Master's degree in public health, social work with a macro focus or a relevant area is preferred. Two years of work experience in community health, community development, behavioral health, substance abuse or another relevant field is desired. Have and maintain a valid driver's license. Must reside in Wyandotte County or be willing to relocate within 12 months of the date of hire. Funding for this position expires 9 / 30 / 2026; the position will work with the Community Health Manager to secure continuation funding.
Salary Range : 26.74-$35.76 / hr.
