What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional position at Union County Disabilities & Special Needs Board?
The Direct Support Professional will support people with intellectual disabilities/related disabilities in their development of basic living and social skills. The employee will work Swing, 2nd or 3rd shift in a group home with up to 4 individuals with varying levels of cognitive skills.
*Staff will instruct and encourage individuals living in the Community Training Home (group home)
*Assist and document the development and implementation of goals (training) for the individuals.
*Establish a positive relationship with the families, staff, case management, and individuals we serve.
*Assist individuals with personal hygiene as needed (bathing, brushing teeth, dressing, etc) if necessary
*Perform and/or assist individuals in basic domestic duties as needed (cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping).
*Coordinate and participate with individuals in leisure and recreational activities.
*Maintain records and complete paperwork (medication logs, behavior reports, injury reports, accountability logs, and goal data).
*Ensure that Behavior Support Plans and Health Management Recommendations are followed as recommended.
*Maintain individuals and agency funds in accordance with UCDSNB policies and procedures.
*Attend 1 week Orientation, 1 week 'On the job training' & maintain annual training as required (CPR, First Aid, Med. Tech, Abuse, etc.) by UCDSNB.
*Maintain a safe environment for the individuals. Report any safety violations or maintenance concerns to immediate supervisor.
*Prepare and/or assist individuals with preparation of meals in accordance with their diets, shopping for supplies and groceries, and cleaning their rooms.
*The people we support do not live in our workplace, our staff work in their homes.
Skills and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred but not required if applicant can pass a reading, math and comprehension competency test.
- Ability to use independent judgement, great decision making skills, verbal and written communication skills, human relation skills, team working skills, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours/days and some weekends as required. Days off vary due to the rotating schedule.
- Must have a passion for working with individuals with disabilities and special needs.
- Should be able to exhibit high levels of patience and compassion.
- Must be open to a flexible schedule and able to multi-task.
- Must have a valid Driver's License and clean driving record.
- Must be able to attend job training and pass Medication Technician Certification Course.
