Job Description: To create an elementary classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary grade education in accordance with each student’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

Job Summary:
Duties of this job include, but are not limited to: 

• Teaching reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, and health, to students in a classroom, utilizing North Carolina course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
• Uses a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc.
• Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
• Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
• Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program.
• Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
• To create and manage a caring, supportive, purposeful and stimulating environment which is conducive to children’s learning.
• To plan and prepare lessons in order to deliver the North Carolina Curriculum ensuring breadth and balance in all subjects.
• To identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenge and high expectations.
• To maintain good order and discipline among the pupils, safeguarding their health and safety.
• To organize and manage groups or individual pupils ensuring differentiation of learning needs, reflecting all abilities.  
• To plan opportunities to develop the social, emotional and cultural aspects of pupils’ learning.
• To maintain a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping and reporting of children’s progress.
• To prepare appropriate records for the transfer of pupils. To ensure effective use of support staff within the classroom, including parent helpers and para-professionals
• To participate in staff meetings as required.
• To be part of a whole school team, actively involved in decision-making on the preparation and development of policies and programs
• To ensure that school policies are reflected in daily practice.
• To communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of their children’s education – academic, social and emotional.
