Dean of Students (Upper School)
Under the direction of the Head of Upper School, the Dean of Students (Grades 5-12) serves to promote a positive school culture by supporting students’ academic and behavioral growth. This role involves working collaboratively with students, families, teachers, and other school administrators to ensure a supportive learning environment. The Dean of Students will implement and enforce student discipline policies, lead restorative practices, support student attendance and maintain positive parent relationships in accordance with the school’s mission, vision, and charter.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs various administrative duties to assist the Head of Upper School in managing the upper school; assumes the duties assigned.
- Collaborates with the Heads of Upper and Lower School to directly oversee transportation.
- Develops and administers disciplinary procedures per Board policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, Executive Director, Head of Upper School, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
- Supervises students on campus; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students per established guidelines.
- Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings, as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
- Provides direction to various faculty, staff, and student programs and services; participates in formal and informal classroom visitations and observations; provides recommendations and suggestions for improvement as appropriate.
- Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and MTSS team meetings.
- Liaison to the after-school program in collaboration with school faculty and/or personnel from outside agencies.
- Liaison to extracurricular activities, the student athletics program, and other competitive or performance programs and events. Supervises activities, including evening activities, as assigned.
- Works with the Head of Upper School to establish a safe and secure student learning environment.
- Develops plans for emergencies in collaboration with other administrators, faculty, staff, and public safety agencies; directs the work of yard duty staff and crossing guards; plans and debriefs emergency drills; updates the school safety plan.
- Prepares and maintains various board, district, county, state, and federal records and reports; directs staff preparation of records and reports.
- Participates in administrative meetings and training to improve administrative skills; maintains current knowledge of the school’s adopted curriculum.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- Valid North Carolina Teaching License
- Valid North Carolina Principal’s License (preferred)
- 7 years as a K-12 Educator
- Teaching or administrative experience middle or high school
- 3 years of school administrative experience
