What are the responsibilities and job description for the Membership Engagement Specialist position at Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign?
The Membership Engagement Specialist welcomes newcomers and visitors and invites them to deepen their connections and involvement in our church community. The Membership Engagement Specialist is a consistent warm and welcoming presence on Sunday mornings, and encourages the congregation at large to create a welcoming atmosphere. The Membership Engagement Specialist coordinates membership programming which promotes membership growth, new member integration, membership tracking, and volunteer identification. The Membership Engagement Specialist serves as a resource for committees and ministry teams who are looking for volunteers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Nurtures a sense of welcoming for visitors and newcomers, including by being present and actively engaging with newcomers and members at UUCUC most Sunday mornings.
- Assists congregation with understanding visitors’ and newcomers’ needs and opportunities to engage with UUCUC.
- Encourages and supports congregation members in creating a welcoming environment for visitors.
- Maintains UUCUC’s database (Realm) to process attendance and membership records and ensure tracking of members’ activities and current membership information.
Newcomer Engagement (40%)
- Ensure that members and visitors have a welcoming experience at worship services and other UUCUC events
- Develop and plan newcomer programs, Pathways to Membership class, and other events and programs
- Assist other staff and lay leaders in working with newcomers
- Track engagement of newcomers
- Recruit, train, and support volunteers for newcomer and membership programs
- Increase engagement in various areas of congregational life, and help direct members to volunteer opportunities and programs they may be interested in
Membership Engagement and Growth (30%)
- Develop a visitor to member pathway process for membership that is sustainable and accessible
- Work with Faith Development and Congregational Life to create and support programs in alignment with UUCUC mission and values
- Work with Ministers, relevant committees, and the Board of Trustees to create a seamless process of outreach to ensure that members are fully engaged in church life, and that those at risk of resigning membership do not fall through the cracks
- Assist in production of weekly e-news to promote programs and invite participation
Membership Database (15%)
- Manage the membership portion of the church’s database system, Realm:
- work to make sure visitors and new members are entered
- reach out to members who appear to be inactive to re-engage them
- ensure the database is kept current in this area throughout the year
- Collect and analyze data on member engagement
- Track member engagement (ensuring where possible inclusion of demographic information)
- Maintain visitor records
- Use analytical tools to provide information on trends in membership (demographic, geographic, etc.)
- Provide membership data to committees and staff as needed
Online Presence, Communication, Technology, and Outreach (15%)
- Collaborate with staff team to enhance our online presence
- Offer expertise and support to make our online presence welcoming and engaging for newcomers
- Increase UUA and denominational connections via membership in UU Association of Membership Professionals (UUAMP) and other professional trainings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Training and experience in membership/program engagement
- Willingness to work in a progressive, faith-based organization
- Demonstrated leadership and group facilitation skills
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships within a community
- Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, across a wide range of groups and identities
- Computer Skills: ie, Database management (Realm or similar); Google docs maintenance and creation (documents, spreadsheets, etc.); familiarity with virtual meeting and various social media platforms
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use a keyboard, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop. the employee must frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Has training in Word, Excel, Publisher, WordPress, social media, and database software, as well as writing, grammar, and publication layout.
- Management Skills: Manages work time well without over-working; marshals resources (people, funding, materials) to get projects completed on time and successfully; keeps accurate records and a functional filing system.

- The Minister approves duties and responsibilities of this position and supervises this position.
- The Board of Trustees establishes salary and benefits, with advice from the Personnel Committee and Minister.
