What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time Child Care Worker position at Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana Champaign?
Reports to: Director of Lifetime Faith Development (DLFD), supervised by Child Care Coordinator
Status: Up to 4 hours per week
FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt
UUA Equivalent: Child Care Worker
Hours: Sundays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. (including summer and holidays) and occasional weeknight or weekend hours.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Provide safe, nurturing, welcoming, and engaging care to congregants' and visitors’ children during church services and events.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide care for infants and toddlers in the church nursery on Sunday mornings. Provide supervision and care for children up to 12 years old during occasional church events on evenings or weekends.
- Take attendance and ensure parents/guardians sign children in and out of the nursery and complete visitor forms or REE registration forms. Consult with parents/guardians regarding the child’s health history, allergies, and any other concerns regarding the child’s well-being while in the nursery's care. Communicate any concerns to parents/guardians upon pick-up.
- Facilitate and participate in age-appropriate activities with the children, such as games, roleplaying, reading and storytelling, songs, fingerplays, or simple crafts. Assist children in practicing age-appropriate skills, such as self-care, care of belongings, manners, cooperation, and community engagement.
- Concerning safety and discipline, caregivers will:
- Use positive language to direct or redirect children.
- Refrain from physical discipline or punishment.
- Maintain a space that is physically and emotionally safe for all children and caregivers.
- Ensure that children in diapers or in the process of potty training remain clean and dry by using frequent diaper checks and potty breaks. Follow guidelines and procedures for diaper changes and potty breaks.
- Report any injuries or accidents to the Child Care Coordinator.
- Set up or clean the nursery/childcare space before or after service, depending on the schedule; report any concerns to the Childcare Coordinator.
- Conduct classroom inventory checks and inform the Childcare Coordinator when supplies/equipment are needed or in disrepair.
- Assist in preparing and serving simple snacks or meals for children and help them clean up afterward.
- Accurately and timely completion of timesheet to log hours worked.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience caring for children in a group setting, knowledge of child development, and a clear background check in compliance with the Safe Congregations Policy. CPR and First Aid certification preferred but not necessary.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lift and carry children or equipment which could weigh up to 30 pounds. May need to bend, twist, kneel, stoop, crouch, or crawl. Ability to sit and get up off the floor. These tasks can be performed with or without assistance.
