Summary

This position provides supervision and safety to children while on the bus and in the classroom. Under the direction of the Bus Driver or Teacher and the Education/Disabilities Manager, the Bus Monitor/ Floater helps to create and maintain an atmosphere in which children feel welcome, valued, comfortable and secure. The Bus Monitor/ Floater will help the program day-to-day operations run smoothly.

Duties

BUS MONITOR:
The Bus Monitor is responsible for assisting children to their seat so the monitor can secure the required 3-point harness in a timely manner. The monitor supervises children at all times they are on the bus and addresses any behavioral concerns with limited to no disruption for the bus driver. Bus monitors are encouraged to read books to the group, sing songs or find some quiet, creative way to keep them engaged during the route. The Bus Monitor will help tidy up the bus after each route by picking up any loose items on the floor and sweeping as needed. Additionally, the monitor will assist the driver with the pre- and post-checks of the brake lights and turn signals. Bus monitor assists with emergency evacuation drills as scheduled.

EDUCATION:
The Bus Monitor/ Floater cooperates with Management for a daily schedule of classrooms to be sure that day-to-day operations within the full day program are running smoothly. The Floater will work with each individual teaching team for direction and feedback to ensure that he/she is providing the most appropriate support to each classroom. The Bus Monitor/ Floater will supervise children's play activities, help children to participate in individual activities, small, and large group activities, help children with self-help/ toileting activities

CHILDCARE:
The Bus Monitor/ Floater will provide childcare for program events and parent experiences so that parents can be fully engaged in the program and meeting Head Start regulations. The Floater will be a childcare provider at least two shifts per year signing up when the schedule comes out at pre-service in September.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Per OHS requirement, must hold a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education (AA), or be enrolled in a program leading to a CDA or AA within 2 years of employment start date.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement or willing to get one.
