WHAT WE’RE OFFERING
The Field Engineer supports the design, build, and maintenance of fiber and copper distribution networks to enable the delivery of next-generation phone, high-speed internet, digital IPTV, and carrier-class Ethernet products. This position plays a key role in initiatives focused on operational excellence and best practices aligned with United Communications’ vision and mission. Additionally, the Field Engineer will perform related fieldwork and interface with developers and other utilities to represent United.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include the following, but other duties may be assigned as required.
- Review preliminary routing provided by OSP Design Engineering to ensure the path is viable, or propose alternative routing based on field assessments and adherence to standards.
- Specify pole height/class, attachment assemblies, guying assemblies, and collect necessary data to support PLA requirements.
- Prepare staking sheets for new construction, as well as the removal or rearrangement of existing facilities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of property deeds, right-of-way easements, and acquisition processes.
- Interface with landowners to obtain easements and/or permissions for fiber facility construction.
- Conduct pre-surveys of job sites to determine workforce, equipment, material, and safety requirements.
- Plan, coordinate, and inspect construction and right-of-way crew work to ensure jobs are completed accurately and on time.
- Audit the quality of work performed by third-party contractors and internal resources, ensuring compliance with RUS and industry specifications.
- Prepare and submit as-built records to the OSP Design Engineer to maintain an up-to-date engineering database.
- Assist in managing relationships with regional utilities and local and state governments.
- Provide Support for pole attachment matters, including planning and coordinating transfers and make-readies.
- Work with TDOT and other utilities to meet road-move and right-of-way obligations, maintaining detailed records and submitting all required documentation.
- Perform daily assigned tasks as related to construction and engineering projects.
- Address property owner concerns, reports of damage and general inquiries.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Minimum of of 2 years of experience in engineering or network construction related to the responsibilities listed above.
- Basic understanding of computer hardware and software, including word processing and email, with the ability to review and clear assignments and work orders. Touch-typing at 35 WPM is a plus.
- Expert knowledge of CAD and mapping software is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Visio is also required.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Demonstrates high ethical standards and a strong work ethic, with an emphasis on teamwork, respect for others, the ability to acknowledge and build on others' ideas, and support for group decisions.
- Expertise in FTTP engineering design documentation, cost analysis, and related engineering database recordkeeping.
- Knowledge of telecommunications design, construction practices, requirements, and regulations.
- Ability and willingness to work in a dynamic, rapidly changing technology environment, effectively managing multiple projects, stress, and conflict.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written), with the ability to effectively articulate complex situations to colleagues with varying levels of network knowledge.
- Strong problem-solving skills, demonstrating patience and a positive approach.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized, with the ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in operating motorized work equipment and office equipment, including personal computers, phone systems, software applications, hand tools, electric tools, and test sets.
