A Respiratory Therapist provides respiratory care and treatment to patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary issues. They work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and home healthcare environments. Their role is crucial in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the lungs and heart, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and heart failure.
Key Responsibilities :
Patient Assessment : Evaluate and assess patients' respiratory conditions by measuring lung capacity, blood oxygen levels, and other vital signs. Review medical history and collaborate with physicians to develop treatment plans.
Ventilator Management : Operate and manage mechanical ventilators and other respiratory equipment for patients who require assistance with breathing, especially in critical care settings.
Therapeutic Treatments : Administer respiratory therapies such as oxygen therapy, inhaled medications (nebulizer treatments), and chest physiotherapy to improve lung function and respiratory health.
Monitoring and Adjustment : Monitor patients’ response to respiratory treatments, adjusting medications or equipment as needed. Document progress and share findings with the healthcare team.
Emergency Care : Respond to medical emergencies by performing resuscitation or other life-saving interventions like CPR and intubation for patients in critical condition.
