United Health Services is seeking a Director Clinical Pathology (Phyisican) to join our WMC Pathology 04 department at UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, NY. This position is benefits eligible.

Director Clinical Pathology (Phyisican) / Overview

The Director of Clinical Pathology will organize and direct the operations of the Clinical Laboratories Department. The director will report to the Medical Director and Chairman of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Position is 80% in diagnostic work and 20% is administrative.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of all aspects of the laboratory’s quality management system to ensure conformance to requirements described in the Quality Management System chapter of these Clinical Laboratory Practice Standards.
  • Provide continuing education to laboratory staff that is relevant to laboratory medicine.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are established for monitoring staff to assess competency, and whenever necessary, provide remedial training or continuing education to improve skills.
  • Specify in writing the technical and administrative responsibilities and duties of all laboratory personnel. The Clinical Pathology Director is responsible for competency assessment of direct-report supervisors. Documentation of

assessments must be performed annually and whenever new systems are introduced. Remedial steps must be documented when staff do not perform as expected.

  • Promote a safe laboratory environment for personnel and the public.
  • Ensure that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel.
  • Monitor all work performed in the laboratory to ensure that medically reliable data are generated.
  • Assure the laboratory participates in monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of services rendered, within the context of the Quality Management System, regardless of where the testing is performed.
  • Provide advice to referring physicians regarding the significance of laboratory findings and ensure that reports of test results include pertinent information required for specific patient interpretation.
  • Ensure the laboratory is enrolled in the Department’s proficiency testing program for the testing performed and the laboratory adheres to the program’s administrative and technical requirements and for all tests with no available New York State proficiency test, ensure the laboratory adopts an alternate method to verify test accuracy and reliability.
  • Effectively implement a plan of correction to deficiencies identified.
  • Participate in Medical Executive Committee, other institutional, Medical Staff Committees, and interdepartmental activities in the absence of chairman and vice chairman of pathology department.

Staff Supervised

  • Medical technologists or technicians assigned to their department, either permanently or on a daily basis.
  • Interim duties of the Lab Technical Coordinator/Manager include supervision of all Lab personnel, technical, nontechnical and support staff.
  • Reports issues regarding personnel to the appropriate departments/section leaders.

Requirements

  • A physician license to practice in the State of New York and eligible for membership on the UHS Medical Staff. Must be board certified/eligible.
  • Certified by the American Board of Clinical Pathology.
  • A certificate of qualification (C of Q).
  • Dynamic individual with superior professional ability, broad vision, leadership qualities, sensitivity to the health care

needs of the institution, Medical Staff, and community at large.

  • Demonstrates ability to lead, plan, organize and direct a large multi-hospital-based department of pathology.
  • Service orientation with emphasis on appropriateness, accuracy, timelines, and knowledge of and sensitivity of complex relationships with a diverse Medical Staff.
  • Understanding of and interest in the current medico-political climate in the country and pertinent reimbursement issues.

EXPERIENCE: Previous general laboratory experience is preferred.
