The DC Industrial Engineer Intern is an entry-level role designed to provide hands-on experience in an automated 1.8 million square foot, $1B Distribution Center (DC). Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this internship offers an opportunity to develop foundational skills in process analysis, operational efficiency, and Lean principles while supporting daily operations.

The intern will work closely with cross-functional teams to learn and apply industrial engineering concepts, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance productivity and workflow optimization. This role requires curiosity, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in a collaborative team environment that prioritizes trust, teamwork, and innovation.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Operational Support & Process Improvement
  • Assists in designing, analyzing, and improving warehouse workflows using AutoCAD and other engineering tools.
  • Conducts time and motion studies to support the development of labor standards and optimize workforce allocation.
  • Gathers and analyzes data on process efficiency, identifying areas for improvement and proposing solutions.
  • Updates and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Supports the implementation of small-scale process improvements within inbound, outbound, and processing operations.
  • Communication and Collaboration :
  • Works closely with operations, engineering, and leadership teams to support process improvements and operational efficiency.
  • Participates in Kaizen events and problem-solving discussions to drive a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Serves as a liaison between engineering and operations, ensuring effective communication and knowledge-sharing.
  • Engages in team meetings, contributing data-driven insights and observations to improve workflows.
  • Continuous Improvement & Lean Initiatives
  • Supports Lean initiatives, such as 6S, waste reduction, and root cause analysis, to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Assists in the preparation and execution of Kaizen events, learning and applying structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Applies basic Lean methodologies (DMAIC, root cause analysis) to identify inefficiencies and recommend solutions.
  • Research industry best practices and emerging technologies to support innovation and process optimization.
  • Learning & Professional Development
  • Participates in on-the-job training, shadowing experienced industrial engineers and operations leaders.
  • Stays informed about industry trends, automation technologies, and engineering best practices through independent learning and training.
  • Engages in mentorship opportunities within the Engineering team, receiving guidance on career development and technical skills.
  • Develops proficiency in AutoCAD, data analysis tools, and warehouse management systems (WMS) through practical application.
  • Education / Qualifications

  • REQUIRED
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated strong customer service, communications and interpersonal skills with ability to collaboratively address complex workplace challenges.
  • Ability to perform physical activity at a sustained pace including walking, bending, and lifting within an automated distribution center environment.
  • PREFERRED
  • Proficiency in Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Microsoft Office suite.

  • Certification in Logistics or Supply Chain Management.
  • Additional training or coursework in data analytics, lean management, process optimization, or project management.
  • Experience

  • REQUIRED
  • Basic understanding of ergonomics, Lean principles, and process optimization.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • PREFERRED
  • Previous internship or coursework related to distribution, logistics, or manufacturing operations.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, time study methods, and process documentation.
  • Exposure to Lean Six Sigma methodologies (Green Belt certification is a plus).
  • Understanding of automation technologies used in distribution center operations.
  • Schedule

  • Expected to work a minimum 40 hours per week. Overtime may be required based on operational needs.
  • Salary Range

  • New hires will start between $25.00 – $28.00. This range is applicable for the labor market where the role is intended to be hired. Final base salary is directly related to each candidates' qualifications and professional experience uniquely.
