Position Summary
The Prototype Machinist's role involves producing machined parts, products, or components by programming and operating computer numerical control (CNC) production equipment. The machinist prepares, programs, and operates CNC machinery. The machinist develops, edits, or modifies operation sequences based on manufacturing sketches, blueprints, schematics, or models. The machinist sets up machinery for production runs, operates machinery to meet quality and productivity standards, and troubleshoots and resolves errors or discrepancies.
Skills and Responsibilities
- Editing of NC programs set up and machining of 3, 4, and 5-axis mills, multi-axis lathes
- Working with engineering to document and standardize production processes
- Partner with manufacturing and engineering to prioritize work based on production schedule and organizational goals
- Ensure product quality and conformance to engineering specifications
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in machining tight tolerance components.
- Experience machining the following materials: nickel-based stainless-steel alloys (Inconel, Monel, etc.), stainless steel and Titanium.
- Extensive experience with one or more of the following CNC machines:
- Doosan Lynx 2100DL lathes
- Mori Seiki ZT1000 lathes
- Mori Seiki GV-503 5-axis mills
- Mori Seiki NHX5000 horizontal mills
- Mori Seiki NV5000 vertical mills
- Fadal VMC3016 vertical mills
- Experience with 3, 4, and 5-axis CNC machining (Horizontal, mill/turns)
- Working knowledge of Fanuc, Mitsubishi, or other CNC controls
- Excellent blueprint reading skills including GD&T per ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard
- Familiar with use of personal computers
- Ability to provide Design for Manufacturing feedback
- Must be able to work overtime when necessary
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Tooling and fixture design
- Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) experience
- Outside processing knowledge, including heat treatment, plating, coating, EDM, grinding, etc.
- CMM programming/operation experience
- CNC programming skills, preferably Fusion 360
- Conversational programming on the machine
- Experience operating lifting equipment such as forklifts
Physical Requirements
- Walking, standing, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, etc. is required.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to fifty pounds
- Work safely under functional guidelines such as PPE and equipment operation.
- May be exposed to variable noise levels, fumes, hazardous chemicals, or airborne particles
