Job Brief :
The Senior Expert position will serve as program lead on promoting and enhancing mediation as a core peacebuilding method for the Youth, Peace & Security program. The Senior Expert will provide strategic guidance and support design and operation of the youth & mediation streamline. The expert will provide support to youth leaders working on different forms of mediation in conflict settings, and to stakeholders working with youth mediators. The Senior Expert position is remote and will report to the Acting Director of the Youth, Peace & Security Program, and is a member of the Center for Thematic Excellence.
This is a part time term Personal Services Contractor role.
Responsibilities
- Advance the Youth and Mediation workstream by developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy and targeted programming.
- Spearhead the creation of, or improve and adapt effective, innovative approaches and best practices related to youth and mediation.
- Strengthen partnerships with organizations like the African Union and other regional bodies to support youth involvement in mediation efforts and peace processes.
- Create and advise on designing training on mediation for youth mediators to increase their effectiveness and legitimacy as mediators, by applying the latest academic, field, and evaluative research, as well as field-based experience.
- Establish regional advisory boards or sounding boards of experienced youth mediators to document best practices, challenges, and innovations, ensuring that lessons learned are shared and applied across different contexts.
- Document and create a dissemination strategy of successful youth and mediation efforts and approaches to amplify youth-led mediation efforts.
- Contribute to the creation of evidence-based research, publications and articles on the intersection of youth and mediation, including but not exclusively, land disputes, cease fires, humanitarian passages, tribal and clan wars, among others. Develop guidelines to protect young mediators, especially in high-risk areas, and provide ethical training to navigate cultural differences and power imbalances.
- Demonstrates USIP's thought leadership on youth and mediation by participating in various conferences, events, briefings to government officials, and other programs to speak on behalf of USIP.
- Builds strategic partnerships and cultivates contacts with subject matter experts and a wide variety of external organizations to leverage resources and combine efforts to promote the youth, peace & security team and USIP goals.
- Develop strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of youth mediation programs, including funding models & partnerships
- Travel overseas might be required.
