ABOUT THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located in Newport, RI, is a critical component of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where we enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for admission to, and success at USNA.
NAPS is a ten month post-secondary preparatory school, emphasizing preparation in mathematics, chemistry, English Composition, physics, and Information Technology. The students have diverse backgrounds, coming from high schools across the United States and its territories or they may be prior enlisted members of the Navy and Marine Corps. The NAPS student body (the Battalion) is selected from applicants to USNA, with each candidate being required to complete the NAPS program before being admitted as a student at USNA.
The Naval Academy has produced noted leaders, and its graduates (many of whom began their journey at NAPS) have excelled in every walk of life. As an historic officer accession program and premier undergraduate university, USNA has a unique place amongst American educational institutions. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) invites applications for a Chemistry Instructor to start as early as January 2025. The mission of NAPS is to enhance midshipman candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for success at the U.S. Naval Academy. NAPS provides a stimulating environment that instills a passion for lifelong learning and imbues our midshipmen with the intellectual curiosity and analytical rigor needed to be in the forefront of technological advances and global understanding in a rapidly changing and diverse world. NAPS seeks outstanding faculty and staff from all segments of society, and provides them with the necessary support resources to enable midshipmen to achieve academic success.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate Classroom Effectiveness - Prepare and provide clear instruction while necessarily adjusting pace and depth to maximize learning, while following a prescribed curriculum and schedule of instruction as coordinated with other instructors. Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment to stimulate intellectual effort, motivate and facilitate learning, provide a comfortable environment for questions to be asked, and support the rules of the organization. Assessment and feedback of student homework, quizzes and tests are core elements of instructor duties. Smaller class sizes enable the instructor to provide that critical feedback providing opportunity for students to improve their knowledge of content, display of work, understanding of mathematical concepts and procedure and attention to detail in problem solving. Periodically supervise and assist students in a laboratory setting.
- Provide Out of Class Academic Instruction – Provide individualized extra instruction by appointment and on a walk-in basis. Monitor study periods, sometimes involving large groups of students, including providing tutoring, maintaining an environment conducive to learning, mentoring students in study strategies, time management, and positive work habits.
- Maintain Curriculum Vitality – Provide suggestions to update course curriculum as needed. Support the creation of syllabi, or common course assessments such as assignments, worksheets, or tests, as assigned. Changes in course material are often required to ensure relevance and better prepare students. Coordinated course material is utilized to ensure consistent preparation and assessment of students with similar skill sets.
- Support School-wide Mission – Provide leadership for curricular and extracurricular activities plus other collateral duties that are made available. Participate in suitable professional development for personal and professional advancement.
- Coordinate with Supervisor - Balance focus on a range of critical elements as directed by the chemistry supervisor in a timely fashion with an awareness of the academic calendar.
This is an on-site, 10-month salaried, federal excepted service position with an initial 3-year appointment. The position is supported by reimbursable funds. Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in chemistry (or a closely related field requiring significant chemistry coursework) or education with a focus in chemistry from an accredited college or university.
- High degree of computer literacy (must be demonstrated in resume)
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least one year of full-time chemistry classroom teaching experience at the high school or introductory undergraduate level.
- A master’s (or higher) degree in chemistry or related field, or chemical education, or chemistry/science education.
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
