What are the responsibilities and job description for the COUNSEL/PROFESSIONAL STAFF position at United States Senate?
Ranking member of a high-profile Committee seeking qualified candidates to work on surface transportation policy work, including safety, oversight, and economic regulation. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing legislative and policy proposals; agency oversight; drafting policy memoranda; attending constituent and stakeholder meetings; and preparing for Congressional hearings and floor debate. Applicants should have strong understanding of the transportation industry, including those aspects regulated by the Department of Transportation, the Surface Transportation Board, the National Transportation Safety Board, or the Transportation Security Administration regarding the trucking, freight, rail, vehicle, and pipeline and hazardous materials. Candidates with in-depth experience on vehicle safety, including National Highway Traffic Safety Administration policy issues are encouraged to apply. All candidates must have at least five years of relevant experience, with an emphasis on legislative activities, and have a record of being proactive and demonstrating initiative. The candidate must also work well under pressure and possess excellent written and oral communication skills. The position requires strategic thinking and the ability to work independently as well as within a team. An ideal candidate would have a connection to the Pacific Northwest.
