A safety specialist implements safety procedures and monitors their effectiveness. Set standards that ensure safety processes follow government rules and regulations for safe workplaces. Perform inspections and write reports on the safety of a workplace or work site. Display ongoing and effective safety leadership at all times.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes.
- Recommend and implement process and product safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to work hazards.
- Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
- Investigate workplace accidents/injuries to determine causes and preventive measures.
- Review plans and specifications for construction of new machinery or equipment to determine whether all safety requirements have been met.
- Report or review findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections, or environmental testing.
- Review employee safety programs to determine their adequacy.
- Conduct or direct industrial hygiene testing to verify compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Conduct or coordinate worker training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment. This includes safety training for new hire orientation, ongoing re-training, and compliance training.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to organizations on how to handle health-related problems and make needed changes.
- Maintain liaisons with outside organizations such as fire departments, mutual aid societies, and rescue teams, so that emergency responses can be facilitated.
- Write and revise safety programs and policies that engage all employees.
- Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents.
- Create and lead steering committees, when necessary, to promote continuous improvement. (i.e. PPE, corrective action, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Academic degree in EHS/OHS or related field, and/or BCSP Credentialed, and/or extensive experience in General Industry/Construction EHS/OHS
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation
- Understanding of federal, state and local EHS/OHS regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT and industry best practices
- Ability to manage multiple priorities at the same time while meeting deadlines
- Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and managers
- Understanding of how to develop, implement and evaluate shop and construction safety documentation such JHAs PTPs and SSSPs
- Leadership skills, such as the ability to motivate a team and provide feedback
- Ability to work will all levels within the organization is essential to this position is the ability to maintain a professional relationship with staff, co-workers and the laws.
Working Conditions
Special working conditions cover a range of circumstances from regular evening and weekend work, shift work, working outdoors, working with challenging clients, and so forth. This position requires local travel to jobsites in the CT, MA, NH, ME, RI, and NY areas.
