Today, we have six FDA-approved therapies that treat PAH, pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Our near-term pipeline seeks to develop additional therapies for PAH and pulmonary fibrosis (PF). The cure for end-stage life-threatening diseases like PAH, PH-ILD, PF, and many others is an organ transplant, but only a small percentage of donated organs are available to address the vast need. For this reason, we are working to create manufactured organs to address the shortage of kidneys, hearts, lungs, and livers available for transplant. We believe an unlimited supply of tolerable, transplantable organs will eliminate the transplant waiting list and cure end-stage organ diseases for which transplant is not currently an option. United Therapeutics is seeking a Principal or Lead EHSS Engineer to drive health, safety, sustainability, and environmental compliance in a complex and innovative technical environment. Key Responsibilities Environmental Develop and elevate relationships with external stakeholders including regulatory agencies. Utilize environmental data to drive continuous improvements and sustainability efforts. Oversee environmental permit development and regulatory compliance. Health Lead biosafety initiatives related to working with biohazardous and human sourced materials and overseeing regulatory safety aspects of recombinant DNA work. Lead industrial hygiene initiatives related to the handling of chemicals including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), ensuring engineering controls and other safeguards are in place. Safety Implement safety strategic objectives and ensure compliance in facility operations. Identify and mitigate hazards related to new equipment installation. Oversee safety practices for R&D sites. Oversee safety practices for manufacturing and maintenance. Sustainability Drive initiatives to minimize environmental impact, including water and energy conservation, waste and GHG reduction. Engage employees in sustainability awareness and best practices. Support sustainability decision-making at all levels of the organization while maintaining a strong engineering foundation. Minimum Requirements Lead EHSS Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, sciences, environmental health, safety, or a related field and 8 years of EHSS experience in chemical, life sciences, pharmaceutical, or related industries 6 years of EHSS experience in high level expansion project Proven track record in EHSS program implementation Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations Experience with EHSS management systems and audits Effective project management and training delivery Principal EHSS Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in chemical engineering, sciences, environmental, health and safety or related technical discipline with 10 years of relevant work experience in chemical, life sciences, pharmaceutical or other related industry 8 years of EHSS experience in high level expansion projects Working knowledge of federal, state and local regulations with ability to interpret regulatory issues and provide a recommend action plan Proven track record with successful interface with multi-level regulatory agency personnel EHSS management systems lead auditing experience Implement complex multi module EHS management system Project management skills with an attention to detail, timelines, and results Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in chemical engineering, sciences, environmental, health and safety or related technical discipline with 6 years of relevant work experience in chemical, life sciences, pharmaceutical or other related field Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist Experience in an FDA regulated environment Job Location United Therapeutics requires this candidate to live near our Silver Spring, Maryland or Durham, North Carolina office. We have fun, we do good. The salary for the Lead EHSS Engineer ranges from $125,000 to $150,000 per year. The salary for the Principal EHSS Engineer ranges from $139,000 to $165,000 per year. In addition, this role is eligible for the Company’s short-term and long-term incentive programs. The salary ranges are the ranges United Therapeutics Corporation in good faith believes are the ranges of possible compensation for these roles at the time of this posting depending on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
